Speech/Communication Specialist

FSMA believes that a speech/communication specialist is an integral part of our school. This person must embody the spirit of the school and have a great depth of skills. Along with daily speech caseload, there may be other responsibilities - providing presentations for classrooms on relevant topics, working with teachers and families around communication needs of students or outside resources, communicating with families and staff to create a consistent approach, and creating a school environment where every child has their speech and language needs met.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • To provide clinical diagnosis, prescription and support to reduce or eliminate speech and hearing impediments that interfere with the individual student's ability to succeed in the classroom setting.
  • Serve as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement.
  • Assist and guide teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments.
  • Provide a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, hearing, and language impairments.
  • Provide appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual students' needs and correct existing speech or language handicaps.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggestions for the student's daily activities.
  • Provide information, support, and counseling to parents and families when appropriate.
  • Provide professional development and serves as a consultant to teachers and school staff members on topics concerning speech services.
  • Maintain lists of referred, screened, and eligible students, as well as a directory of outside agencies, consultants, specialists, and related services.
  • Collaborate with the MTSS team to ensure student needs outside of Special Education are met.
  • Develop, implement and monitor IEPs for students.

Qualifications:

  • Delaware license as a speech pathologist.
  • Master's Degree or equivalent with major emphasis in speech-language pathology, communication disorders or speech-language and hearing science.
  • Satisfactory completion of Praxis Speech/Language Pathology.
  • Additional characteristics: Professional attitude and appearance, Highly organized and able to prioritize, Ability to multi-task in a highly visible, fast paced, team oriented environment, Ability to handle confidential matters and information
