Director of Internal Communications (hybrid)

Boston Children’s Hospital is entering a critical period of evolving from a hospital centric organization to an integrated, enterprise-wide system delivering care across multiple locations, modalities, and partnerships. The organization is also embarking on a Brand strategy reset to better position the organization to achieve its objectives and drive its mission forward. In parallel, Boston Children’s is undergoing a major digital and operational transformation, including migration to Microsoft365 platforms (e.g. Teams, SharePoint) and implementation of Workday as its enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. Internal Communications will play a key role in aligning, engaging, and mobilizing the workforce at scale. The Director, Internal Communications will lead the internal communications function and help set direction for how the enterprise communicates with and engages its workforce. This role directs day-today activities and the strategic execution of communications programs that activate, inform, and align the enterprise’s workforce. Reporting to the Senior Director, this role manages a team of communications professionals — the Internal Communications Manager, the Internal Communications Manager for Human Resources, and the Internal Communications Manager for Franciscan Children — and is accountable for the enterprise wide quality, consistency, and measurable impact of employee-facing communications. The Director will also partner closely with the Director of Executive Communications to align strategies and Executive visibility across the enterprise. This position is an essential partner to clinical, operational, and administrative leadership, translating organizational priorities into clear, compelling, actionable communications for a complex and mission driven workforce. The Director will play a critical role in building a modern, best-in-class internal communications function that is digital first, data driven, and AI-supported. The Director will independently lead major initiatives and represent the function at senior levels.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Enterprise Communications Strategy & Execution
    • Drive the enterprise internal communications strategy, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and consistency across the system.
    • Develop and maintain a comprehensive editorial calendar aligned to enterprise priorities.
    • Serve as a senior strategic advisor to stakeholders, providing counsel on messaging, timing, audience targeting, and change communications.
    • Lead communication planning for enterprise-wide initiatives, including culture, engagement, and transformation efforts.
    • Own communications strategy for major enterprise transformations, including Microsoft platform adoption (Teams, SharePoint) and Workday implementation.
    • Design and implement audience segmentation and targeting strategies to improve relevance and effectiveness across a diverse workforce, including audiences that do not have regular access to electronic communications.
  2. Channel & Digital Experience Leadership
    • Provide oversight to team managing all internal communications channels.
Qualifications

Education required: Bachelor’s degree. Area of study: Communications, Journalism, English, Public Relations, or a related field.

Experience required: Minimum of 8-10 years of progressive experience in internal communications, corporate communications, or a closely related field. Demonstrated experience operating at a senior level, advising leadership, and influencing decision-making. Experience managing or mentoring communications staff.
