Description

Job Description: Summary: The Medical Technologist – Baccalaureate (BS) is responsible for the independent performance of moderate and highly complex testing to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Required to demonstrate practical knowledge and theoretical understanding of procedures in the clinical areas and critical thinking skills. Expected to have a comprehensive understanding of the scientific principles used in diagnostic testing in order to recognize deviations in expected results, analyze technical problems and make necessary corrections to achieve quality results. The ability to operate and maintain variety of complex scientific equipment is a requirement of this job. Responsibilities include troubleshooting and repair of selected instrumentation. The abilities to recognize quality control deviations; communicate problems to management, pathologists, as well as other staff members; and assist with problem resolutions are also requirements. May be asked to assume charge responsibilities that include workflow monitoring, and serving as the first line response for medical personnel with regards to problem solving and resolution. The scope of care may involve direct patient contact procedures such as phlebotomy on children, and adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients. Other procedures may include therapeutic phlebotomies on adult and geriatric patients. May be required to provide didactic and clinical technique instructional training and competency assessments to new team members and students. May participate in other clerical activities to ensure smooth work flow and provide documentation for the patient charge. A high degree of cooperation, consideration, and sensitivity is essential when communicating with patients, visitors, physicians, and other hospital personnel. May be required to act as the primary professional contact with outside agencies including reference laboratories and others. Must be able to demonstrate flexibility and resourcefulness to resolve problems and develop workable solutions. Good communication skills required. Written communication must be legible. Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
