Description This is advanced biological and scientific work at the fully experienced level involving responsibility for initiating, planning and coordinating programs and plans necessary for the study of distributions, habitats, life history and the classification of marine, recreational, or commercial terrestrial specifics within the Virgin Islands. An employee in this class works under the supervision of the Chief, Bureau of Wildlife Programs, but is given full responsibility for seeing that the programs, management plans and other operations are developed and carried out properly. Work is reviewed through conferences and reports to ensure that acceptable standards are met.
Duties and Responsibilities DUTIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE): Develops detailed plans to systematically study and obtain new or additional information regarding certain aspects of the life history or ecology of a commercially important species in a particular wildlife refuge. Organizes and oversees the work of lower level personnel engaged in research studies and projects. Studies the distribution, habitats, life history and classification of wildlife, Collects, compiles and analyzes data collected on research and survey projects for possible utilization in the improvement of wildlife programs.
Trains and instructs scientific and technical personnel in proper techniques, biological and physical control of wildlife management. Prepares reports and or manuscripts suitable for publication in professional journals, as well as scientific articles for division use and publication. Assists in the compilation and preparation of data specifications for federal grant-in-aid programs to be used in conserving and developing wildlife resources.
Present talks and lectures to various groups and the general public to disseminate information regarding divisional activities, policies, and programs objectives as it relates to wildlife programs. Maintains gear and laboratory equipment. Performs other related duties as may be required.
Minimum Qualifications Ph.D. in Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Management, Zoology or other related field, which includes a relevant thesis topic and such courses as wildlife science and/or management, vertebrate biology, general zoology, ecology, etc.; plus two (2) years relevant experience; OR Masters Degree in Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Management, Zoology or other related field which includes a relevant thesis topic and such courses as wildlife science, wildlife management, vertebrate biology, general zoology, ecology, etc.; plus four (4) years experience in a related field to include two (2) years in the position of Wildlife Biologist II level. Position Factors FACTOR l- KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION: Knowledge of the principles of wildlife management, conservation and preservation
Knowledge of conventional research guides, precedents, methods and techniques pertaining to wildlife refuge. Knowledge of the habitats of wildlife. Knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, and administrative procedures governing the management of wildlife.
Ability to formulate, supervise and evaluate the work performed and conclusions reached. Ability to establish and maintain an effective and harmonious working relationship with employees, agency officials and the general public during the course of work. Ability to swim.
FACTOR-2- SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: Work is performed under the direction of the Chief, Bureau of Wildlife Programs. Assignments are reviewed upon completion by the supervisor to determine adequacy and correctness. FACTOR-3- GUIDELINES: Guidelines include departmental policies, procedures, scientific literature where applicable, records of previous projects.
FACTOR-4- COMPLEXITY: Work is advanced at this level and involves full responsibility for executing plans and programs. FACTOR-5- SCOPE AND EFFECT: To provide information which will be beneficial in alleviating major problems in wildlife refuge, as well as to improve cultural conservation or other management and industry practices. FACTOR-6- PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are made with co-workers the general public, and agency representatives.
FACTOR-7- PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: To provide information relative to wildlife programs, as well as to elicit cooperation in the gathering of data and the manner of collecting and reporting such. FACTOR-8- PHYSICAL DEMANDS; The work requires bending, stooping, swimming and standing in order to conduct research and achieve desired objectives. FACTOR-9- WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in wildlife habitats, laboratories, and in office.
