What is a work study program?

A Work Study Program is a federally or institutionally funded program that provides part-time jobs for students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay for educational expenses. These jobs are often located on campus or with approved off-campus employers, and are designed to be flexible with students' class schedules. Participating in work study can help students gain valuable work experience while also assisting with college costs. Not all students qualify, as eligibility is determined through the financial aid application process.

How does participating in a work study program help students develop professional skills while balancing academic responsibilities?

Participating in a Work Study Program allows students to gain valuable work experience directly related to their field of study, often in a flexible environment that accommodates their class schedules. Students typically work part-time on campus or with approved off-campus employers, developing skills such as time management, communication, and teamwork. Balancing work and academics can be challenging, but supervisors in these programs are usually understanding of academic commitments and may offer additional support during exam periods. This practical experience not only enhances a resume but also helps students build professional networks that can be beneficial after graduation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a work study program, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Work Study Program, you generally need strong time management, organizational skills, and be enrolled as a student meeting eligibility requirements. Familiarity with basic office software, data entry systems, or specific campus platforms is often necessary depending on the assigned role. Dependability, adaptability, and effective communication help you balance academic and work responsibilities while building professional relationships. These skills and qualities ensure you can successfully contribute to your workplace, manage your workload, and gain valuable experience for future employment.

FEDERAL WORK-STUDY PROGRAM

Federal Work-Study is a federal student aid program that provides part-time employment to eligible students while they are enrolled in school to help with education-related expenses. Students are paid directly for the hours they work, and total earnings cannot exceed the Federal Work-Study amount awarded for the academic year.

The Financial Aid Office will determine the maximum number of hours a student may work based on their Federal Work-Study award amount, class schedule, and academic progress.

ย

Application & Selection

There is a very limited number of Federal Work-Study positions available, and the number of eligible students exceeds the number of available positions. Receiving this email and submitting an application do not guarantee a Federal Work-Study position.

Please carefully review the available job descriptions before completing the Skills and Interests Questionnaire. Students will be selected and assigned to departments based on their skills, interests, availability, and departmental needs. Students selected for a position will receive a proposed department assignment and work schedule.

ย

Compensation

Federal Work-Study positions are paid at the applicable New York City minimum wage, currently $17.00 per hour.

Work-Study Expectations

Work schedules cannot conflict with classes or other School-related opportunities and commitments. While special scheduling arrangements may occasionally be possible, they cannot always be accommodated. Students who anticipate participating in a significant number of activities that may regularly interfere with their work schedule should carefully consider their ability to make this commitment before applying.

Continued Federal Work-Study employment is contingent upon satisfactory performance and the ability to meet the expectations and scheduling needs of the assigned department. If a department determines that the placement is not a suitable match, or if concerns arise regarding performance, professionalism, attendance, consistency, or recurring scheduling conflicts, The Ailey School reserves the right to discontinue the student's Federal Work-Study employment.
