Job description

Overview
The goal of the Harrison Lab is to understand how immune cells promote barrier tissue integrity and repair, and to understand how this goes awry during disease. This work-study position is for up to 19 hours each week.
Responsibilities
The individual in this position will be involved in projects exploring the immune response to commensal and pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. The techniques likely to be used include DNA isolation, PCR and gel electrophoresis to conduct genotyping, basic flow cytometry of circulating blood immune cell populations, tissue sectioning, immunofluorescence staining and microscopy. They will also be responsible for general laboratory duties including preparation of stock solutions, lab stocking and maintenance.
Students will gain experience in the following areas: conduct DNA isolation, perform PCR and gel electrophoresis, and determine sample genotype. Conduct tissue dissection and cell isolation. Conduct cell staining and basic flow cytometry. Stock lab supplies, prepare reagents, autoclave.
This position is solely open to candidates who are work-study eligible.
Qualifications
A high school diploma or GED and enrollment in a university-level science degree program (e.g., biology, chemistry, or biochemistry) are required. Previous or current coursework in biology and/or chemistry and past laboratory experience are preferred. Experience with molecular biology techniques is highly desirable. Demonstrated accuracy, attention to detail, and ability to learn new skills quickly is essential.
Compensation
$22.00 to $26.38 per hour
