Job description

Summary
About the Position: This position is located at the Logistics Readiness Center (LRC), United States (U.S.) Military Academy, West Point. Located in the scenic Hudson River valley, only 50 miles from New York City, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point is a four-year academic institution, a nationally-renowned historic site, and the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. The undergraduates, known as cadets, are commissioned as officers in the U.S. Army upon graduation.

Duties
Help
  • Use specialized sewing machines to create buttonholes, eyelet, bar tack, over edge, cylinder and chain stitch.
  • Occasionally perform other duties such as hand sewing, alterations or repairs.
  • Identify completed garments according to size and lot and apply bar coding tickets.
  • Prepare for assembly work already cut.
  • Operate a standard high-speed industrial sewing machine.
  • Work with different types of fabrics and/or clothing materials.

  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and annual examinations thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

Qualifications

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Sewing Machine Operator~ without more than normal supervision. (1) aligning and positioning materials to perform straight and slightly curved edge stitching; (2) operating sewing machines used for lock stitching; and (3) making alterations to garments which result in an exact fit. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Sit and/or stand for long periods of time with continued movement of hands, arms and fingers in placing items in position for sewing, ticketing or pressing. Handle pieces of fabric or articles of clothing that are relatively heavy and bulky.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Shop is adequately lighted, ventilated, and heated. Operators are subject to cuts, punctures, scratches, burns and other minor irritations and injuries from handling sharp tools and pressing equipment. Subject to allergies from dyes, dust, and lint from fabrics. Also, operators are subject to noise from sewing machines.

Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
