Job description

Job Overview

Fairview is seeking a Somali Spoken Language Healthcare Interpreter to join our team. This is a full-time, benefit-eligible position working 80 hours per pay period. In this role, you will provide accurate and culturally responsive interpretation services to support communication between patients, families, and healthcare providers across a variety of care settings, helping to ensure equitable access to high-quality care. While this position offers flexibility in where work may be performed based on operational needs, candidates should be comfortable supporting a dynamic healthcare environment and adapting to a variety of patient care interactions. 

Somali Health Care Interpreter - Spoken Language provides virtual language access for all stakeholders involved in the health care encounter by providing meaningful language services and supporting effective and equitable communication via virtual platforms with demonstrated fluency in at least one source language to at least one other target language. Employees hired to provide quality remote services must meet and maintain home office requirements to ensure compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Hired employees will be required to sign Remote Work from Home (RWH) Agreement and comply with department-outlined workspace requirements.
Responsibilities

  • Interpret accurately and completely, conveying the content and spirit of the original message, taking into consideration the cultural context that is responsive to the demands of the situation.
  • Has proven understanding of basic healthcare terminology and physical anatomy
  • Ability to use both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting skills when appropriate
  • Manage set-up and flow of communication to promote communicative autonomy
  • Facilitate communication across cultural differences and alerts all parties to significant cultural or linguistic disparities that may significantly impact outcomes
  • Maintain confidentiality and understand the interpreter scope of practice
  • Adheres to NCIHC Code of Ethics & Standards of Practice.


Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 40 hours of formal training (ex: Bridging the Gap or The Community Interpreter) or Certificate from accredited post-secondary organization
  • 2 years Remote Healthcare Interpreting or 1 year Remote Health Care Interpreting and 1 year Onsite Medical Interpreting
  • Must provide proof of appropriate work area setup in compliance with RWH agreement
  • Minnesota Department of Health Spoken Language Interpreter Roster Upon Hire

Preferred Qualifications

  • A.A./A.S. Interpreting or Related Field
  • 5 years Combination of Medical and Remote Healthcare Interpreting
  • Nationally Recognized and Accredited Interpreting Certification Upon Hire
