Description


Position Summary: 

The wood yard operator is responsible for assisting the wood yard manager in: buying and selling all species of wood, organizing the wood in an efficient and timely manner, directing the equipment operators within the woodyard, and managing the sawmill operations within the woodyard. The wood yard operator processes wood and loads trucks with a loader crane when needed and scaling trucks.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Contributes to developing and maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Maintains personal safety and watches out for the safety of others.
  • Accept and appreciate your fellow team member's watching out for your safety and offering suggestions or advice
  • Complies with all OSHA safety guidelines.
  • Communicates with team members and customers in a positive and collaborative manner. 
  • Communicate both effectively and tactfully with a wide variety of individuals in person, on the telephone and via two-way radio.
  • Consistently maintains a positive and problem-solving attitude.  
  • Understands and adheres to Treeline's employment handbook.
  • Maintain an OSHA approved first aid kit.
  • Determine appropriate hours of operation
  • Asist in buying and selling wood and monitoring wood specs to ensure compliance.
  • Obtain a Wood Scaler's Apprentice license /Train on the job to ultimately obtain a Wood Scaler's license. 
  • Train on DEP Stormwater and Spill Plan maintenance procedures and ensure compliance
  • Communicate with Treeline's crews as needed to procure appropriate products from our own crews
  • Operate heavy equipment-including front end loaders, crane, and yard machinery safely, efficiently and effectively
  • Unload trucks safely and timely
  • Slash and sort stems to proper wood specifications
  • Assist in managing yard space according to needs
  • Assist in managing log inventory to support the sawmill and firewood processing yard
  • Operate computer and scale trucks in and out accurately
  • Perform consistent accurate reporting
  • Perform proper maintenance on equipment, buildings, and truck scales
  • Perform daily safety and maintenance checks on all equipment in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations in the operator's manual
  • Maintain work area in a clean, neat, and orderly manner
  • Keep supplies on hand for equipment and buildings
  • Report woodyard activities and status on a regular basis to the operations manager and the President 
  • Communicate with the lead technician regarding any equipment maintenance and repair needs
  • Perform duties professionally and proficiently 


Requirements

  • Education/Experience/Qualifications: 
  • Minimum: High School Diploma.
  • Desirable: CPR/First Aid card.
  • Current Valid Driver's License

  • Apply knowledge of mechanical functioning of various components on the equipment and make manage repairs related to the equipment as these problems occur. 


Physical Demands: 

  • Regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms. 
  • Remain sitting for up to 90% of the workday.
  • Demonstrate visual and auditory acuity in order to safely operate equipment
  • Climbing in and out of machine frequently
  • Exposure to periodic moderate to fairly loud noise, below 85db
  • The ability to work outdoors in all four-season weather conditions and temperatures
  • Wearing OSHA required PPE


Work Environment: 

  • The time will be split between outside condition and sitting in the operator's cab, which is normally climate controlled.
  • The operator is subjected to severe exposure of slippery surfaces, such as icy and muddy conditions.
  • The noise level is loud but generally below 85 decimals. 
  • The operator must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as hard-hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, and safety vest that will be furnished by the company.
