What is WMS implementation?

WMS implementation refers to the process of deploying a Warehouse Management System (WMS) within an organization to manage warehouse operations more efficiently. This process includes selecting the right WMS software, configuring it to meet business requirements, integrating it with existing systems, and training staff. The goal of WMS implementation is to improve inventory accuracy, streamline workflows, and enhance overall warehouse productivity. Successful implementation can lead to reduced costs, better customer service, and improved inventory control.

What are some common challenges faced during a WMS implementation, and how can they be addressed?

A common challenge during a WMS (Warehouse Management System) implementation is ensuring seamless integration with existing systems, such as ERP or inventory platforms. Misalignment in data formats or workflows can lead to delays or errors. Another frequent hurdle is change management, as warehouse staff need adequate training and support to adapt to new processes. Proactive communication, thorough testing, and phased rollouts can help mitigate risks and make the transition smoother for all stakeholders involved.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in WMS implementation, and why are they important?

To thrive in WMS (Warehouse Management System) Implementation, you need a solid understanding of supply chain processes, warehouse operations, and relevant IT or logistics degrees or certifications. Familiarity with leading WMS software (such as SAP EWM, Manhattan, or Oracle), project management tools, and integration platforms is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help manage cross-functional teams and client expectations. These skills are crucial for ensuring smooth system deployment, minimizing disruptions, and optimizing warehouse efficiency.

About Fulfillment IQ (FIQ):

Fulfillment IQ is a supply chain engineering and transformation company that helps brands, retailers, and 3PLs design, build, and scale high-performance logistics operations.

We work at the intersection of strategy, operations, and technology where we solve complex, real-world problems across warehouse design, automation, order management, transportation, and end-to-end supply chain execution.

Our teams combine deep domain expertise with strong technical capability, delivering outcomes through consulting, systems implementation, and proprietary platforms that accelerate time-to-value and reduce delivery risk.

If you enjoy working in complex environments, partnering closely with clients, and seeing your work make a tangible impact on how global commerce moves, this is the place where your skills and judgment truly come to life.

Role Overview:

A strategic enterprise client has given feedback that solutions delivered to date solve the immediate problem but don't proactively surface alternative approaches with clear tradeoffs. This role owns that gap: leading new customer onboarding and scale upgrade initiatives, and acting as the techno-functional lead who brings multiple solution options, live demos/POCs, and informed recommendations to the client - rather than a single prescribed fix.

Mandate:

  • Lead new customer onboarding and the scale upgrade project for the account as a techno-functional owner
  • Translate client requirements (new interfaces, EDI, Receiving/Put-away, Wave templates, Picking, Packing and Shipping) into multiple solution options rather than a single fix
  • Present pros/cons and demos/POCs for each option so the client can make an informed decision

Must Have:

  • Techno-functional background in WMS (Manhattan Scale) with solution design experience
  • Experience across multiple 3PL sites/facilities - not just a single-site background
  • Demonstrated ability to build and present POCs/demos comparing multiple solution paths
  • Strong client-facing communication and presentation skills
  • Experience leading WMS implementations, upgrades, or large enhancement programs
  • Ability to conduct business process workshops and requirement-gathering sessions
  • Ability to create functional specifications and design documentation
  • Ability to provide effort estimations and implementation recommendations
  • Ability to partner with technical teams to ensure successful solution delivery
  • Ability to present proposed solutions to operational and executive stakeholders

Nice to Have: Prior experience leading new customer onboarding or scale upgrade projects; EDI or complex interface design exposure

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead new customer onboarding and scale upgrade projects for the account
  • Translate client requirements into multiple solution options with pros/cons
  • Build and present POCs/demos to support client decision-making
  • Act as the primary techno-functional point of contact for new initiatives on the account
  • Conduct business process workshops and requirement gathering sessions
  • Support scale upgrade and modernization projects
  • Create functional specifications and design documentation
  • Provide effort estimations and implementation recommendations
  • Partner with technical teams to ensure successful solution delivery
  • Present proposed solutions to operational and executive stakeholders

What Success Looks Like in the First 90 Days:

30 Days In:

  • Ramp up on the account, current systems, and key stakeholder relationships

60 Days:

  • Lead the first new customer onboarding or scale upgrade workstream
  • Deliver the first options-based solution proposal (multiple paths with pros/cons) to the client

90 Days:

  • Fully own solution design and SCALE WMS implementation for new initiatives on the account
  • Demonstrate a repeatable ability to present multiple options with clear tradeoffs to the client

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

  • Number of options-based solution proposals delivered (vs. single-fix recommendations)
  • Client satisfaction/feedback on solution presentations and demos
  • Time from requirement gathering to solution proposal delivery
  • Onboarding/scale upgrade milestone adherence
  • Quality and completeness of functional specifications and design documentation
