What is the difference between Wireless Systems Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectWireless Systems EngineerNetwork Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in engineering or IT, certifications like CWNA, CCNA WirelessUsually holds a bachelor's in computer science or related field, certifications like CCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesigning, implementing, and maintaining wireless networks in various settingsManaging wired and wireless network infrastructure across organizations
Industry UsageTelecommunications, IT services, enterprise networkingIT departments, service providers, corporate networks

Wireless Systems Engineers focus on wireless network design and deployment, while Network Engineers handle broader network infrastructure, including wired and wireless systems. Both roles require similar certifications and often work in overlapping environments, but their primary responsibilities differ.

What are some common challenges faced by Wireless Systems Engineers and how do they typically address them?

Wireless Systems Engineers often encounter challenges such as mitigating interference, ensuring network security, and optimizing system performance in diverse and dynamic environments. They address these issues by conducting thorough site surveys, employing robust encryption methods, and utilizing advanced simulation and diagnostic tools. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—including hardware, software, and network specialists—is essential to troubleshoot problems and implement effective solutions. Staying current with evolving wireless standards and technologies also helps anticipate and overcome potential challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Wireless Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Wireless Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in wireless communication principles, RF engineering, and a relevant degree in electrical or telecommunications engineering. Expertise with simulation tools like MATLAB, RF design software, and certifications such as CWNA or Cisco Wireless are common requirements. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication skills help engineers collaborate and address complex issues efficiently. These competencies are vital for designing reliable wireless networks and ensuring seamless connectivity in rapidly evolving technological environments.

What does a Wireless Systems Engineer do?

A Wireless Systems Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining wireless communication networks and systems. Their work involves optimizing network performance, troubleshooting connectivity issues, and ensuring reliable data transmission over wireless platforms such as Wi-Fi, cellular, or satellite. They collaborate with other engineers to develop new wireless technologies and may also test and validate hardware and software solutions. This role is crucial in industries like telecommunications, IoT, and mobile device development.

Job description

Hubble Network was founded with the intention of delivering on the promise of what Internet-of-Things (IoT) was supposed to be. We're building a global Bluetooth® network dedicated to machine-to-machine connectivity. We differentiate ourselves as the first modem-less and gateway-less, direct-to-satellite network from off-the-shelf Bluetooth® Low Energy chips. Hubble is ideal for applications in logistics, AgTech, and maritime where economies of scale for volume consumer and enterprise asset tracking is a priority. Our goal is to be the first billion-endpoint-connected network in the world.
Hubble is an early-stage, venture-backed startup supported by some of the best investors in the world. In their previous lives, the founding team has been successful in raising $100s of millions in venture funding, developing the Amazon Sidewalk network, launching billions of dollars of space assets, and leading their teams to successful exits, both through acquisition and IPO. We are now looking to bring on talented team members who are the best at what they do to help us make Hubble a reality for the world.
As a Wireless Systems Engineer, you will be part of the team developing and implementing algorithms to enable wireless connectivity between Terrestrial Bluetooth® devices and satellites. You will be involved in all aspects of the modeling, system design and implementation of wireless communication and work with cross-functional groups of hardware-software engineers.
This is a full-time position with preference to be based in Seattle, WA (Relocation Assistance Available) but open to a remote work option (for senior/more experienced candidates).
