Job description

Position Description
ISCO is seeking a Senior Wireless DSP / PHY Algorithm Engineer to research, design, and develop advanced signal processing algorithms for 5G wireless communication systems and infrastructure.
This role focuses on the development of algorithms for 5G wireless communication systems, including interference detection and mitigation, RF signal conditioning, and advanced PHY-layer receiver processing. In this role, you will develop MATLAB-based models of wireless systems, analyze real-world time-domain IQ signals, and design algorithms that improve receiver performance in challenging interference environments.
The work spans multiple stages of the wireless signal processing chain, including digital front-end (DFE) processing in radios as well as advanced PHY-layer receiver algorithms implemented in baseband units. Work includes algorithm development for both time-domain signal processing and OFDM receiver processing, including equalization, combining, and interference-aware detection techniques. This includes the development and evaluation of receiver algorithms such as MRC, IRC, MMSE-based equalization, and interference-aware combining methods for multi-antenna OFDM systems. Algorithms may be implemented in FPGAs or software.
This position spans the full innovation lifecycle, including research, invention of new signal processing algorithms, modeling, simulation, laboratory validation, and product deployment. The role involves close collaboration with RF, FPGA, and software teams to transition algorithms from concept into deployed telecom products.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys inventing and developing novel signal processing techniques, creatively adapting existing algorithms to address challenging interference environments, and translating advanced receiver algorithms into practical wireless infrastructure solutions.
Education/Experience
MSEE or PhD in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on digital signal processing and wireless communication systems.
5-7+ years of experience developing signal processing algorithms for wireless communication systems in a product development environment.
Required Skills
1. Must have demonstrated expertise in DSP algorithm modeling and development using MATLAB for 5G wireless communication systems. Proficiency with MATLAB and its toolboxes is required.
2. Experience developing DSP algorithms including either radio Digital Front-End (DFE) signal processing or baseband PHY-layer receiver algorithms.
3. For candidates with radio DSP experience, hands-on experience implementing radio digital signal processing techniques, such as digital filtering, crest factor reduction, digital predistortion, and digital upconversion/downconversion.
4. For candidates with baseband PHY experience, strong understanding of OFDM receiver processing, including channel estimation, equalization, MIMO detection, and combining techniques such as MRC, IRC, and MMSE.
5. Familiarity with wireless system concepts including RF propagation, MIMO systems, beamforming, channel modeling, OFDM modulation/demodulation, and practical RF front-end considerations in 5G radio systems.
6. Experience using and developing system-level and link-level simulations for 5G receiver algorithms is desired.
7. Familiarity with software implementation of signal processing algorithms, and awareness of practical implementation considerations such as fixed-point modeling or FPGA-based implementations.
8. Experience working with RF test equipment or laboratory validation of wireless systems, such as spectrum analyzers, signal generators, network analyzers, or similar instrumentation.
9. Good communication skills. Able to clearly and concisely communicate with team members, sales team, customers and management on issues concerning designs and other business issues.
10. Experience with patent disclosures and filings is a plus and will be part of the job.
Additional Requirements
Occasional domestic travel in support of customer meetings or product trials is required. Travel is estimated at about 10% of the time.
Since ISCO makes equipment for cellular operators and cellular networks operate 24/7, on rare occasions some work (particularly during product trials) may have to be performed during off hours between 12am - 4 am or weekends.
Location
This position is at ISCO headquarters in Schaumburg, IL. Remote candidates are also strongly considered given the right set of skills and experience.
