What does a wireless network engineer do?

As a wireless network engineer, your job is to install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot the systems of a wireless computer network. In this role, you may offer technical support, help clients perform basic maintenance on their own, or design new networks while considering factors like geography, building materials, and expected usage. Wireless network engineers often help manage firewalls, train other engineers, and use tools to evaluate the performance of each part of the network. Fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of a wireless network engineer role requires excellent communication, research, and computer skills, as well as the ability to stay current with any qualifications required in this rapidly changing industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a wireless network engineer?

To thrive as a Wireless Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of wireless networking principles, RF technologies, and network design, usually backed by a relevant degree and industry certifications such as CWNA or Cisco Wireless. Familiarity with tools like spectrum analyzers, network monitoring software, and wireless LAN controllers is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing, securing, and maintaining reliable wireless networks that support organizational connectivity needs.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a wireless network engineer?

A Wireless Network Engineer typically spends their day designing, implementing, and maintaining wireless network systems to ensure strong, reliable connectivity for users. This includes conducting site surveys, troubleshooting connectivity issues, optimizing network performance, and configuring wireless hardware such as access points and controllers. Collaboration with IT teams and end-users is common, as engineers often coordinate security measures and support large-scale deployments or upgrades. Regular documentation and reporting are also key parts of the role to keep the network running smoothly and efficiently.

What is the difference between Wireless Network Engineer vs Network Administrator?

Job description

At Wizards of the Coast, we connect people around the world through play and imagination. From our genre-defining games like Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons to our growing multiverse, we continue to innovate and build new ways to foster friendship and connection. That's where you come in!

The Network Engineer works on Wizards of the Coast's enterprise network spanning datacenters, corporate offices, studio environments, and AWS cloud. Our network is evolving: an AI-driven Juniper/Mist campus fabric, a Palo Alto Networks security edge, and cloud-native connectivity into AWS form the backbone of our next-generation architecture. You will collaborate with engineering teams across the company during design, development, and implementation while researching, evaluating, and implementing emerging technologies, AI-assisted operations, and automation tooling.

What You'll Do:
  • Design, implement, and operate our Juniper/Mist campus and branch infrastructure.
  • Engineer and maintain the Palo Alto Networks security stack.
  • Build and support AWS cloud networking - VPC design, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect/VPN, Route 53 - and hybrid connectivity between on-premises datacenters and cloud, including WAN traffic engineering with BGP, OSPF, and SD-WAN.
  • Automate network configuration, validation, and deployment using Python, APIs, and infrastructure-as-code tooling (Terraform, Ansible).
  • Modernize network observability - streaming telemetry, flow analysis, and cloud-native monitoring.
  • Maintain a working understanding of emerging architecture trends (next-generation datacenter, SASE, zero-trust); conduct proof-of-concept exercises, provide design mentorship, and communicate across business, creative, and technology teams.
What You'll Bring:
  • 6+ years of enterprise network engineering experience across routing, switching, and wireless - with hands-on depth in Juniper (EX/QFX/SRX, Mist) and/or Cisco (Catalyst, Nexus) platforms, and experience with (or strong readiness for) AI-driven network operations such as Mist/Marvis.
  • Strong knowledge of Internet routing protocols (BGP, OSPF), traffic engineering with BGP and SD-WAN, and load balancing solutions.
  • Hands-on experience with Palo Alto Networks firewalls, including policy architecture and Panorama; Checkpoint or Fortinet experience also valued.
  • Working experience with AWS networking services - VPC, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect/VPN, Route 53, security groups - and cloud monitoring such as CloudWatch, plus core network services (DNS, DHCP, IPAM).
  • Understanding of Linux, proficiency in at least one scripting language (Python preferred), comfort consuming APIs, and demonstrated use of AI tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot, Marvis) to accelerate engineering work.
  • Analytical problem-solving skills across large-scale distributed platforms, and the ability to communicate and deliver under deadline constraints.
Nice to Have:
  • Active certifications: AWS Advanced Networking Specialty, or AWS Solutions Architect.
  • Prisma Access / SASE deployment experience, or Palo Alto Cloud Identity Engine (CIE) exposure.
  • Infrastructure-as-code in production - Terraform or Ansible pipelines managing network state.
  • Experience in a multi-studio, multi-BU entertainment or gaming enterprise environment.

In compliance with local law, we are disclosing the compensation range for this role. The range listed is just one component of Wizards of the Coast's total compensation package for employees. Employees may also be eligible for annual and long-term incentives. In addition, Wizards of the Coast provides a variety of benefits to employees. Here's a look at what your benefits package may include: Medical, Dental & Vision Insurance, Paid Vacation Time & Holidays, Generous 401(k) match, Paid Parental Leave, Volunteer Program, Employee Giving & Matching Gifts Programs, Tuition Reimbursement, Product Discounts, and more.

Wizards is committed to equality of opportunity in all aspects of employment. We are committed to making all employment decisions without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, marital status, or any other legally protected status.

The above is intended to describe the general content of and the requirements for satisfactory performance in this position. It is not to be construed as an exhaustive statement of the duties, responsibilities, or requirements of the position.

We will ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodation to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and to receive other benefits and privileges of employment. If you are selected to move forward in our application process and need to request an accommodation, please let your recruiter or coordinator know.
