Job description

Job Summary:
Boston Medical Center (BMC) is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Network Infrastructure Group. The role involves planning, coordination, configuration, installation, and management of network infrastructure and related client services to meet business requirements, while also leading a team and ensuring a stable performance environment for enterprise systems.
Responsibilities:
• Leads the strategic and tactical planning of LAN/WAN and wireless environments, including discovery and documentation of user requirements
• Manages the technical work done by the Network Engineering team. Prioritizes and assigns work, tracks projects to completion. Builds relationships with cross-functional project teams and works closely with internal and external customers. Manages network technical support queue.
• Install, monitor and troubleshoot network equipment, circuits and services. Diagnoses and resolves complex problems that may include the interrelation of network devices, network and server operating systems, databases, applications and end user devices.
• Manages network change management, including design, approval, testing and sign-off. Ensure adequate procedures and documentation are created and maintained.
• Manages relationships with external partners and vendors and internal customers
• Evaluate and recommend products and services to improve the performance, stability, manageability and security of the network
• Holds daily meetings (or “huddles”) with staff to discuss daily plan, any open issues and focus for the day.
• Schedules team assignments for the week, for the day and schedules breaks. Reviews with manager at least monthly.
• Provides technical guidance and expertise to the members on the team. Provides direction and development to employees by coaching, identifying training needs, assigning progressively challenging projects, and assisting in career development planning.
• Assists with new hire set-up (assigns and issues keys and lockers to new hire, sets up desk area, requests logins, etc.).
• Monitors performance and compliance with departmental procedures and evaluates staff in annual performance appraisals.
• Assist in setting priorities and managing resources to achieve unit, division, and corporate goals
• Makes recommendations for department standards, policies and guidelines.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline; Master’s degree is desirable.
• Cisco CCNA required. Other Cisco, F5 or Aruba certification is desirable.
• Four to six years of related experience in infrastructure/network environments performing network engineering (hardware and software), and designing, planning, and implementing LAN, WAN and WLAN technologies in a multiple-datacenter, large campus environment.
• Minimum of three years of experience in Cisco configuration programming and analytical work.
• Experience with Cisco Nexus a strong plus.
• Thorough understanding of distributed systems architecture and comprehensive knowledge of multiple technical disciplines.
• Excellent technical knowledge and aptitude in the areas of networks, network topologies, wired and wireless networking.
• Ability to solve network infrastructure issues and to manage the performance and capacity of a LAN/WAN environment.
• Demonstrated experience in effectively managing small to large projects in a cross-functional environment.
• Demonstrated ability in effectively managing small teams of technical engineers.
• Ability to effectively adapt to rapidly changing technology and apply it to business needs.
• Understanding of the enterprise business and business processes; knowledge of business unit functions and cross-group dependencies/relationships.
• Ability to anticipate user requirements and identify and resolve complex problems with minimal supervision; strong customer service and communications skills.
• Good judgment and analytical skills; strong follow-up and organizational skills.
• Ability to conduct and prepare feasibility studies; develop client proposals, including estimates for costs, time, and resources; prepare statistical reports; complete cost/benefit analyses; and conduct business.
• Ability to assess internal and external communication practices, anticipate future network requirements, and research and analyze emerging technologies.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the following technical knowledge/skills are mandatory, including from among the following: Hardware: Cisco routers and Catalyst switches, Cisco Nexus switches, ASA, F5 LTM & GTM, Aruba wireless.
• Protocols: TCP/IP, Radius, OSPF, BGP, SNMP, OTV.
• Connectivity: Frame relay, T1/T3 private networks, ISDN, DSL, dark fiber.
• WAN/LAN management: SolarWinds Orion, Aruba Airwave, Cisco ACS.
Preferred:
• A broad range of technical knowledge/skills are desired, including from among the following: OS: Microsoft Windows, VMware, Linux, AIX, and Macintosh.
• Desktop: Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh.
• Mobile: Familiarity with mobile/portable technologies.
• Familiarity with Unix systems desirable, with experience in installation and administration of one or more operating systems.
