How much do wire harness manufacturing jobs pay per hour?

As of May 29, 2026, the average hourly pay for wire harness manufacturing in the United States is $17.32, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.38 and $18.75 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Wire Harness Manufacturing, and why are they important?

To excel in wire harness manufacturing, strong attention to detail, manual dexterity, and a basic understanding of electrical systems are essential, often supported by a high school diploma or relevant technical training. Familiarity with tools such as crimping machines, wire strippers, and reading wiring schematics is typically required, and IPC/WHMA-A-620 certification can be advantageous. Effective teamwork, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to quality ensure accuracy and efficiency on the production line. These capabilities are critical for producing reliable wire harnesses that meet industry standards and ensure the safety and functionality of end products.

What are some common challenges faced in a wire harness manufacturing role, and how can they be addressed?

A common challenge in wire harness manufacturing is ensuring accuracy and consistency while working with complex wiring diagrams and tight production schedules. Mistakes in assembly or incorrect routing can lead to costly delays, so attention to detail and strong organizational skills are essential. To overcome these challenges, many manufacturers implement standardized procedures, quality control checks, and collaborative training with experienced team members. Embracing continuous learning and openly communicating with colleagues can also help resolve issues quickly and maintain high production standards.

What is wire harness manufacturing?

Wire harness manufacturing is the process of designing, assembling, and producing wire harnesses, which are organized bundles of wires, cables, and connectors used to transmit electrical power and signals in vehicles, machinery, and electronic devices. The process involves cutting, stripping, crimping, and assembling wires according to specific diagrams and quality standards. Wire harnesses help ensure electrical systems are reliable, easy to install, and neatly organized, reducing the risk of short circuits or installation errors.

What is the difference between Wire Harness Manufacturing vs Cable Assembly?

AspectWire Harness ManufacturingCable Assembly
CredentialsTechnical training, certifications in wiring and electrical systemsSimilar certifications, focus on wiring and electrical standards
Work EnvironmentFactories, production lines, assembly areasFactories, assembly stations, sometimes on-site installation
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, industrial equipmentConsumer electronics, telecommunications, industrial machinery
Job FocusDesign, manufacturing, and testing of wire harnessesAssembling individual cables and connectors

Wire Harness Manufacturing and Cable Assembly are closely related roles in electrical wiring industries. While wire harness manufacturing involves creating complex wiring systems used in vehicles and machinery, cable assembly focuses on assembling individual cables and connectors. Both require similar skills, certifications, and work environments, but differ in scope and application.

Job description

We're building safety-enhancing technology for aviation that will save lives. Automated aviation systems will enable a future where air transportation is safer, more convenient and fundamentally transformative to the way goods - and eventually people - move around the planet. We are a team of mission-driven engineers with experience across aerospace, robotics and self-driving cars working to make this future a reality.
As a Sr. Harness Manufacturing Engineer at Reliable Robotics, you'll play a critical role in developing and continuously improving our harness manufacturing, harness installation, and supply chain processes to meet design, regulatory, and business requirements (including safety, quality, cost, and on-time delivery). This is a growing team of highly motivated people passionate about delivering quality products and services on time, with unquestionable value. You will be responsible for designing the build and installation process for wire harness assemblies, conducting design for excellence (DFx) reviews, and developing the processes and infrastructure to help the business scale. The projects you work on will set the foundation for how the business operates for years to come. This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a safety-critical environment that takes automated aviation systems from prototype to production in a hands-on environment.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and manage supplier relationships to ensure they meet or exceed manufacturing, testing, inspection, quality, performance, and reliability requirements
  • Develop design for excellence (DFx) processes, and conduct reviews to evaluate designs for cost, producibility, inspectability, consistency, adequacy, accuracy, and conformance to requirements
  • Develop supplier qualification processes and conduct regular reviews
  • Develop quality control plans and inspection infrastructure, including functional testing
  • Develop and execute technical work instructions for harness fabrication, testing, and vehicle-level installation
  • Read and interpret controlled documentation, and processes such as layouts, assembly procedures/work instructions, schematics, engineering drawings, and master parts lists.
  • Collaborate with quality and engineering teams to identify and resolve non-conformances related to wire harness assemblies
  • Improve our manufacturing capabilities by upgrading equipment, validating new test setups, and turning those processes into clear documentation and training

Basic Success Criteria
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, aerospace, or systems engineering
  • 7+ years of professional experience fabricating wire harnesses
  • 4+ years of hands-on experience reviewing technical designs and working from drawings, schematics, layouts, assembly/procedures, master parts lists, and other controlled documentation
  • Proficiency in interpreting electrical schematics and harness drawings
  • Experience in building complex and highly reliable wire harness assemblies with a strong background in IPC-A-620, NASA-STD-8739.4, or other forms of wire harness quality standards
  • Experience working in high-reliability manufacturing environments (aerospace, aviation, defense, medical)

Preferred Success Criteria
  • Experience with harness design software (Capital or Zuken)
  • Experience with 3D CAD software (Solidworks, NX, or similar)
  • Experience in automated test equipment for continuity, HI-POT, and other functional validation
