What is a Wire Harness Design job?

A Wire Harness Design job involves creating electrical wiring systems that connect various components in vehicles, machinery, or electronic devices. Designers use CAD software to develop schematics, select appropriate wires and connectors, and ensure compliance with industry standards. They collaborate with engineers and manufacturers to optimize functionality, reliability, and ease of assembly. This role requires knowledge of electrical systems, material specifications, and routing constraints to create efficient designs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Wire Harness Design position, and why are they important?

To excel in Wire Harness Design, candidates need a strong grasp of electrical engineering principles, schematic reading, and hands-on experience with harness layout, often supported by a degree in electrical or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software such as AutoCAD Electrical, CATIA, or E3.series, along with certifications in IPC/WHMA-A-620 or similar standards, is highly beneficial. Excellent problem-solving abilities, collaboration skills, and attention to detail help designers work effectively with cross-functional teams and ensure high-quality results. These skills are crucial to producing reliable, manufacturable harnesses that meet safety, quality, and industry requirements.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in Wire Harness Design?

As a Wire Harness Designer, your typical day involves creating and updating wiring diagrams, developing detailed CAD models, and coordinating with engineers to ensure all electrical and mechanical interfaces are compatible. You'll often review design specifications, select appropriate materials and connectors, and interact with manufacturing teams to address production challenges. Collaboration is key, as you may also meet with quality engineers, testing teams, and project managers to ensure the harness meets all regulatory and safety requirements. This role offers a combination of technical design work and teamwork, allowing you to see your designs come to life in real-world products.

At CesiumAstro, we are developers and pioneers of out-of-the-box communication systems for satellites, UAVs, launch vehicles, and other space and airborne platforms. We take pride in our dynamic and cross-functional work environment, which allows us to learn, develop, and engage across our organization. If you are looking for hands-on, interactive, and autonomous work, CesiumAstro is the place for you. We are actively seeking passionate, collaborative, energetic, and forward-thinking individuals to join our team.

We are looking to add a Senior Wire Harness Design Engineer I to our team. If you enjoy working in a startup environment and are passionate about developing leading-edge hardware for satellites, spacecraft, and aerospace systems, we would like to hear from you.

This role focuses on designing the critical power, digital, analog, and RF interconnects that turn boxes into systems. You will have the opportunity to take full ownership of wire harness designs, including schematic development, cable routing, connector selection, and harness assembly drawings. The environment is highly collaborative, working shoulder-to-shoulder with electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and harness assembly technicians to develop cutting-edge space and airborne systems.

The role encompasses the full design process, from defining initial specifications through integration and test. You will also participate in design reviews, providing technical expertise and recommendations to enhance the performance and reliability of wire harness systems.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • 4 years of relevant industry or university research experience.
  • Proficiency in harness design tools such as RapidHarness.
  • Solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, wire routing, controlled impedance, cable shielding, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) considerations.
  • Ability to conduct thorough analysis and testing of wire harness designs to ensure compliance with applicable industry standards, safety regulations, and performance requirements.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to wire harness design, such as IPC-WHMA-A-620 and ISO 9001.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with lab instruments such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and electronic loads.
  • Detail-oriented approach with a high level of accuracy in design documentation and technical specifications.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
  • Aerospace industry experience.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
  • Experience designing for space environments.
  • Hands-on experience assembling wire harnesses.
