Job description

Farm Manager

Vet First, Inc. | The Williamsburg Winery

Position Overview

We are seeking a reliable and experienced Farm Manager who is passionate about sustainable agriculture and enjoys hands-on outdoor work. This position is responsible for managing the vegetable gardens, greenhouse and hoop house, fruit trees, and general farm operations located at The Williamsburg Winery.

The Farm Manager will also operate and maintain agricultural equipment, assist with general property projects, and help provide hands-on guidance to veterans participating in Vet First’s agricultural training program.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Employment sponsorship is not available for this position.

Veterans are highly encouraged to apply, although military service is not required.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee the daily maintenance and production of vegetable gardens, including in-ground, greenhouse, and hoop house growing areas.
  • Develop seasonal planting, crop rotation, and harvesting schedules.
  • Maintain fruit trees, orchards, and other agricultural plantings throughout the property.
  • Manage irrigation, composting, soil health, and sustainable growing practices.
  • Monitor and address pests, diseases, and weeds.
  • Operate tractors, mowers, UTVs, and other agricultural equipment.
  • Perform minor property repairs and assist with maintaining equipment, tools, fencing, and irrigation systems.
  • Help construct and maintain raised beds, walkways, hoop houses, and other farm improvements.
  • Provide hands-on guidance and demonstrate farming techniques to veterans participating in Vet First’s training program.
  • Supervise and work alongside volunteers and trainees when needed.
  • Maintain basic records for crop production, planting, harvesting, inventory, and equipment maintenance.
  • Assist with seasonal property projects, landscaping, winery operations, and special-event setup when needed.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized working environment.
Qualifications
  • Prior hands-on farming, gardening, greenhouse, horticulture, or agricultural experience is required.
  • Knowledge of vegetable production, irrigation, soil management, and composting is preferred.
  • Experience operating tractors, mowers, UTVs, or other farm equipment is preferred, although training may be provided.
  • Must be physically capable of performing demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities and manage time effectively.
  • Basic mechanical, carpentry, or maintenance skills are desirable.
  • Comfortable teaching, mentoring, or demonstrating farming techniques to others.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Employment sponsorship is not available for this position.
