Senior Investment Manager, Energy Storage (BESS)

Job description

Who we are - Our Mission

terralayr addresses the massive deficit in global energy storage.
The over-indexing of electricity generation from renewable energy sources leads to large volatility on the energy grid. The main problem is that wind and solar farms are fluctuating and, by definition, unsteady—there is no sun at night, and it is not always windy. This increases the need for flexibility in the form of battery storage systems to balance the grid in times when supply and demand do not match.
By buying and developing grid-scale storage assets and virtually aggregating them across a layer, we are creating the world's first energy cloud. Imagine AWS for energy. Through the flexibility we secure, we can market flexibility-as-a-service and hedging products/power insurance to utilities, SMEs, and industrial players and create virtual storage capacity for PV and wind farms.

What we are hiring for - Your Role

As Senior Investment Manager – BESS (m/f/d), you secure the financial success of terralayr’s capital deployment by leading rigorous investment analysis and decision-making for complex energy storage assets. You turn market complexity into clear, defensible investment cases and help us build the highest quality risk-adjusted BESS portfolio in Germany. You own the investment process from appraisal to Investment Committee decision, ensuring our projects meet the highest standards of bankability, risk management, and long-term value creation.

What you will work on - Your Responsibilities
  • Lead financial appraisal, due diligence, and structuring of BESS transactions, guiding projects through IC approval to Final Investment Decision
  • Build and stress-test investment models (revenue, degradation, volatility, constraints) and translate outputs into clear investment recommendations
  • Establish and maintain best-in-class investment analysis standards (RTB diligence, EPC/LTSA assessment, revenue risk quantification), ensuring every IC memo is audit-ready and decision-grade
  • Evaluate, negotiate, and optimize key project contracts (tolling, EPC, O&M/LTSA) through a risk-return lens to protect capital and increase value
  • Ensure projects meet international project finance bankability requirements and optimize cost of capital through robust structuring and lender-ready documentation
  • Contribute to portfolio strategy by assessing future risks and opportunities (e.g., grid connection models, longer duration assets, alternative technologies, new jurisdictions)
  • Monitor execution and early operational performance, validating investment assumptions and driving feedback loops into future decisions

What we are looking for - Your Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in project finance, infrastructure investing, lending, or structuring non-recourse debt/equity for energy or infrastructure assets
  • Advanced financial modelling and analytical skills, including the ability to stress-test complex assumptions and convert data into defensible investment decisions
  • Strong understanding of bankability requirements and how lenders assess technical, commercial, and contractual risk
  • Ability to evaluate and negotiate key project contracts (EPC, LTSA/O&M, tolling) with a clear risk-return mindset
  • Excellent communication skills, able to synthesize complex risks into clear IC recommendations and confidently defend them
  • Strong critical thinking and willingness to challenge assumptions constructively across internal teams (technical, development, commercial)
  • High ownership, strong execution discipline, and comfort operating in a fast-moving environment
  • Fluent in English (German is a plus)

Why you should be excited about this opportunity
  • Work for a company with a clear mission: A world powered by 100% renewable energy
  • Have impact from day 1: Your contribution will not only have a positive impact on society; by joining our small and nimble team, your work will make a difference from day one.
  • Become a Shareholder: In addition to your competitive base salary your compensation includes an ESOP component that lets you participate in the development of our growing company.
  • Invest into your personal development: We guarantee a steep learning curve combined with a lot of space to bring in your own ideas and shape terralayr’s future. On top, you benefit from our Learning & Development budget of 1,000 EUR per person per year.
