Job description

Job Objective:

The WIC Nutrition Assistant (WNA) provides nutrition counseling for WIC participants following California WIC Program guidelines. The WNA is responsible for enrolling, recertifying, nutrition evaluation, nutrition education, prescribing, and issuing Food Instruments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Conducts nutrition assessment for low risk WIC participants
    1. Evaluates height, weight, and lab values from medical form
    2. Evaluates nutrition questionnaire
    3. Evaluates and prioritizes nutrition risks
  1. Nutrition education
    1. Provides nutrition counseling on ISIS generated risks or participant choice
    2. Includes breastfeeding encouragement and support education for all pregnant participants
    3. Uses motivational interviewing techniques and involves participant in counseling
    4. Counseling is focused and time spent is appropriate
    5. Appropriate pamphlets and referral are given
    6. Facilitate/conduct group education classes
    7. Attend Agency meetings to keep current on participant education topics which includes driving to alternate clinics
  1. Documentation
    1. Enters all data, labs, height/weight, and demographic information into ISIS correctly
    2. Enters note in the INEP screen for all enrollments, recertification's, single trimester, and mid-certification checks
    3. The note entered in the INEP screen is related to the ISIS generated nutrition risk and the appropriate follow up plan is indicated when necessary
    4. All pregnant participants have a breastfeeding support/encouragement note in on the individual screen
    5. Education contacts are documented on the Nutrition Education screen for each participant
    6. Appropriate HOLDS are placed for request for blood test, immunization record, medical forms, address, and income verification
    7. Ensure all appropriate documents are signed by the participant
  1. ISIS competency
    1. Complete enrollments, recertification's, mid-certifications, trimester checks, and Disqualifications according to WIC Program guidelines
  2. Prescribe the correct food package for the participant
  3. Make the correct appointment in the correct clinic for the participant
  4. Enter all data into ISIS correctly

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Safety Officer
  • Manage Food Instrument order
  • Update nutrition education boards in classrooms
  • Over-see outreach activates

Education and Experience:

Education

  • High School Diploma
    • Successful completion of Nutrition 101 or equivalent

Or

  • BS/MS Degree in Food Nutrition Dietetics or a related field

Experience

  • 2 years of experience as a WIC Clerk preferred

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • State of California WIC Program WIC Nutrition Assistant Certification of Completion
  • California driver's license and current car insurance
  • High school diploma and completion of Nutrition 101 or equivalent. Must begin the California WIC Program Nutrition Assistant Certification within 9 months of employment

OR

  • BS/MS Degree must begin the California WIC Program Nutrition Assistant certification within 9 months of employment

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to stand and walk for most of the day
  • Must be able to function in a noisy crowded environment
  • Must be able to lift and carry 15 pounds for short distances
  • Must be able to work schedule required by the needs of the Program
