What is a welding side?

A Welding Side job typically refers to welding work done as a side hustle or secondary job, often on a contract or freelance basis. Welders in these roles take on projects outside of full-time employment, such as repair work, custom fabrication, or small construction jobs. This type of work allows flexibility in scheduling and can be a way to earn extra income. Common industries for side welding jobs include automotive repair, metal art, and home improvement projects.

What are the typical responsibilities of a welding side in a manufacturing or construction environment?

A Welding Side is generally responsible for assisting certified welders by preparing materials, maintaining tools and equipment, and supporting the welding workflow on job sites. Daily tasks may include setting up welding machines, arranging workpieces, inspecting finished welds for quality, and ensuring a safe, organized work area. This role often works closely with welders, fabricators, and supervisors, providing hands-on assistance and contributing to rapid project completion. It's a great opportunity to gain experience and knowledge for career advancement in the welding trade.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the welding side position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Welding Side, you need practical skills in welding techniques, blueprint reading, and metal fabrication, often supported by a high school diploma or vocational training. Familiarity with welding equipment such as MIG/TIG welders, cutting torches, and adherence to safety standards and certifications (like AWS) is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and reliability are important soft skills for excelling in this role. These competencies ensure that welds meet quality specifications and safety guidelines while maintaining efficient workflow in industrial settings.

To find side welding jobs, search online job boards, local classifieds, and industry-specific websites for part-time or freelance opportunities. Building a portfolio of your work and obtaining relevant certifications can also help attract clients or employers seeking welders for short-term projects or additional work.

Job description

Experienced MIG Welder – Container Fabrication

Pay: $20-24 based on experience

Type: Full-time

Location: Wheatland, PA

Shift: Day shift only, 10hrs, 40 to 50 hours per week

Why This Job

We build sealed containers where the weld quality is the priority — no shortcuts, no leaks, no comebacks. If you take pride in a clean bead and want to work alongside other skilled welders who hold the same standard, this is a shop where that craftsmanship actually matters and gets noticed. You'll work in a tight 2–3 person crew, moving containers down the line, with real ownership over your section of the work.

This is not entry-level. We're looking for welders who already know their way around a MIG gun and don't need to be taught the basics.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Running .045" and .052" bare wire MIG on container fabrication, completely welding up units after tacking
  • Welding side posts, stitches (tack to tack, zero holes), end caps, corner wraps, and double-pass hinge welds
  • Welding in every position — flat, vertical, overhead
  • Grinding welds and end caps to a clean finish
  • Reading production schedules and hitting a 1-hour finish-weld target per standard container
  • Operating an overhead crane and working from a ladder in and out of containers
What You Bring
  • 3–5+ years of MIG welding experience, ideally in fabrication or heavy steel work
  • Ability to set up and dial in your own MIG welder rather than working off someone else's settings
  • Comfort welding in multiple positions, including overhead and confined spaces
  • Working knowledge of plate/gauge thickness (able to tell ¼" from 7 ga., 10 ga., and 12 ga. on sight)
  • Tape measure proficiency for layout
  • Physical ability to lift/carry up to 60 lbs, climb ladders, and work in a constant state of alertness
  • Ability to pass a hands-on welding test
  • A team mindset — this role runs as a 2–3 person crew and depends on everyone pulling their weight
What Sets Strong Candidates Apart
  • Experience with sealed/leak-critical welding
  • Speed without sacrificing quality — our benchmark is a clean, sealed container within 1 hour
  • Fabrication knowledge beyond welding alone
Benefits
  • Health Insurance- 75% covered by the company
  • 401k with match
  • PTO
  • Paid Holidays
  • Company Events
