As of Jun 20, 2026, the average hourly pay for welding side in the United States is $29.79, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $23.32 and $34.13 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the best welder for side jobs?

For welding side jobs, a portable and versatile welder such as a MIG (Metal Inert Gas) or flux-cored welder is often recommended due to ease of use and quick setup. These welders are suitable for small to medium projects, require basic skills, and can be used in various environments, making them ideal for side work. Certifications like AWS (American Welding Society) can also enhance job prospects and credibility.

Can you make $100,000 a year welding?

Welding side jobs or careers can potentially reach $100,000 annually, especially for experienced welders with specialized skills such as pipe welding or certifications like AWS. High earnings often depend on factors like location, overtime, and the complexity of projects, with some welders working in industrial settings or construction environments. Building a strong skill set and gaining certifications can improve earning potential in the welding industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Welding Side position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Welding Side, you need practical skills in welding techniques, blueprint reading, and metal fabrication, often supported by a high school diploma or vocational training. Familiarity with welding equipment such as MIG/TIG welders, cutting torches, and adherence to safety standards and certifications (like AWS) is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and reliability are important soft skills for excelling in this role. These competencies ensure that welds meet quality specifications and safety guidelines while maintaining efficient workflow in industrial settings.

What are the typical responsibilities of a Welding Side in a manufacturing or construction environment?

A Welding Side is generally responsible for assisting certified welders by preparing materials, maintaining tools and equipment, and supporting the welding workflow on job sites. Daily tasks may include setting up welding machines, arranging workpieces, inspecting finished welds for quality, and ensuring a safe, organized work area. This role often works closely with welders, fabricators, and supervisors, providing hands-on assistance and contributing to rapid project completion. It's a great opportunity to gain experience and knowledge for career advancement in the welding trade.

How to make side money with a welder?

Welders can make side money by taking on freelance or part-time welding projects such as repairing equipment, fabricating custom metal items, or providing mobile welding services. Building a portfolio, obtaining relevant certifications, and marketing services locally can help increase opportunities for additional income.

Why do welders age so fast?

Welders age quickly due to exposure to intense heat, ultraviolet radiation, and hazardous fumes during welding work, which can accelerate skin aging and cause respiratory issues. Repeated exposure to these elements without proper protective gear and safety measures can lead to faster physical deterioration and health problems.

What is a Welding Side job?

A Welding Side job typically refers to welding work done as a side hustle or secondary job, often on a contract or freelance basis. Welders in these roles take on projects outside of full-time employment, such as repair work, custom fabrication, or small construction jobs. This type of work allows flexibility in scheduling and can be a way to earn extra income. Common industries for side welding jobs include automotive repair, metal art, and home improvement projects.
