What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Welding Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Welding Process Engineer, you need a solid background in welding technology, metallurgy, and engineering principles, often supported by a degree in mechanical or welding engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, welding simulation tools, and relevant certifications like AWS Certified Welding Engineer are typically required. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively and drive process improvements. These skills are crucial for ensuring welding quality, safety, and efficiency in manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Welding Process Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Welding Process Engineers often encounter challenges such as optimizing welding parameters for new materials, minimizing production defects, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. Addressing these issues typically involves close collaboration with production teams, regular analysis of process data, and staying updated on the latest welding technologies. Developing strong problem-solving skills and maintaining effective communication with both engineers and welders helps to quickly resolve issues and ensure efficient workflow.

What does a Welding Process Engineer do?

A Welding Process Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing welding processes used in manufacturing and construction. They select appropriate welding techniques, materials, and equipment, and ensure that welds meet quality and safety standards. Their role also involves troubleshooting welding issues, implementing process improvements, and collaborating with other engineers and technicians to enhance productivity and product quality.

What is the difference between Welding Process Engineer vs Welding Supervisor?

AspectWelding Process EngineerWelding Supervisor
Primary FocusDeveloping and optimizing welding processes, ensuring quality and efficiencyOverseeing daily welding operations, managing welding staff
Required CredentialsWelding certifications, engineering degree often preferredWelding certifications, supervisory or leadership training
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, manufacturing plants, R&D facilitiesProduction floors, fabrication shops
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, and heavy industryCommonly employed in manufacturing and construction sites

The Welding Process Engineer focuses on developing and improving welding techniques and processes, while the Welding Supervisor manages daily welding operations and personnel. Both roles require welding certifications, but the engineer emphasizes process optimization, whereas the supervisor emphasizes operational oversight.

Job description

At Rodney Hunt, we are problem-solvers, focused on a common purpose: solving flow control challenges of the water & wastewater industry. As a global technology and engineering leader, we provide solutions for customers in industrial and municipal markets.
Job Overview:
We are seeking a hands-on Manufacturing & Process Engineer with deep expertise in sheet metal fabrication and welding. This role combines process optimization with manufacturing documentation, focusing on improving production methods, developing SOPs, and supporting the fabrication of custom-engineered gates and water control systems.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop, implement, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for sheet metal and welding processes.
  • Analyze current manufacturing workflows and identify opportunities to improve cost, quality, safety, and efficiency.
  • Design and optimize work methods, tools, fixtures, and layouts for sheet metal forming, cutting, and welding operations.
  • Collaborate with design engineers to ensure manufacturability of custom metal components and welded assemblies.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for fabrication and welding-related production issues.
  • Support Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma initiatives to drive continuous improvement.
  • Assist in selecting, justifying, and commissioning capital equipment for welding and sheet metal fabrication.
  • Train production personnel on new SOPs, equipment, and safety procedures specific to welding and fabrication.
  • Monitor production metrics and implement data-driven process improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with internal specifications and industry standards such as AWS D1.1, ASME, AISC, and ISO 9001.
  • Partner with Quality Assurance to validate and audit fabrication and welding processes.
  • Support organizational safety programs and ensure adherence to OSHA regulations.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering (or related field).
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a manufacturing or process engineering role, with a strong focus on sheet metal and welding operations.
  • Proven experience developing and implementing SOPs for fabrication and welding.
  • Proficient in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and familiar with ERP systems.
  • Strong understanding of welding techniques (MIG, TIG, Stick), metal forming, and fabrication equipment.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologies.
  • Excellent problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, custom-manufacturing environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license or working toward licensure.
  • Experience working with custom-engineered, made-to-order products.
  • Knowledge of ASME, AWS, AISC, and ISO9001 standards related to metal fabrication and welded structures.
  • Familiarity with FMEA, SPC, and root cause analysis tools.
