How much do welding process engineer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 25, 2026, the average hourly pay for welding process engineer in Michigan is $46.51, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $42.55 and $50.48 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Can you make 300k as a welder?

Welding Process Engineers typically do not earn $300,000 annually; such high salaries are uncommon in this role. Experienced welders with specialized skills, certifications, and leadership positions in high-demand industries may reach high six-figure incomes, but this is rare. Salary depends on factors like location, industry, experience, and certifications such as AWS or ASME.

What does a Welding Process Engineer do?

A Welding Process Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing welding processes used in manufacturing and construction. They select appropriate welding techniques, materials, and equipment, and ensure that welds meet quality and safety standards. Their role also involves troubleshooting welding issues, implementing process improvements, and collaborating with other engineers and technicians to enhance productivity and product quality.

What is the difference between Welding Process Engineer vs Welding Supervisor?

AspectWelding Process EngineerWelding Supervisor
Primary FocusDeveloping and optimizing welding processes, ensuring quality and efficiencyOverseeing daily welding operations, managing welding staff
Required CredentialsWelding certifications, engineering degree often preferredWelding certifications, supervisory or leadership training
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, manufacturing plants, R&D facilitiesProduction floors, fabrication shops
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, and heavy industryCommonly employed in manufacturing and construction sites

The Welding Process Engineer focuses on developing and improving welding techniques and processes, while the Welding Supervisor manages daily welding operations and personnel. Both roles require welding certifications, but the engineer emphasizes process optimization, whereas the supervisor emphasizes operational oversight.

How to make $100,000 as a welder?

Welding Process Engineers can earn $100,000 or more by gaining advanced certifications, specializing in high-demand welding techniques like GTAW or orbital welding, and working in industries such as aerospace, oil and gas, or construction. Increasing experience, taking on supervisory roles, and working overtime or in remote locations can also boost earnings.

How much does a welding engineer make?

Welding Process Engineers typically earn a median annual salary ranging from $60,000 to $100,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior roles or those with specialized certifications can earn higher salaries, especially in manufacturing, aerospace, or energy sectors where welding expertise is critical.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineering roles such as petroleum engineers, aerospace engineers, and certain software engineers can reach or exceed a $500,000 annual salary, especially with experience, advanced skills, and in high-demand industries. These positions often require specialized knowledge, advanced degrees, and sometimes leadership responsibilities or stock options.

What are some common challenges faced by Welding Process Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Welding Process Engineers often encounter challenges such as optimizing welding parameters for new materials, minimizing production defects, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. Addressing these issues typically involves close collaboration with production teams, regular analysis of process data, and staying updated on the latest welding technologies. Developing strong problem-solving skills and maintaining effective communication with both engineers and welders helps to quickly resolve issues and ensure efficient workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Welding Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Welding Process Engineer, you need a solid background in welding technology, metallurgy, and engineering principles, often supported by a degree in mechanical or welding engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, welding simulation tools, and relevant certifications like AWS Certified Welding Engineer are typically required. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively and drive process improvements. These skills are crucial for ensuring welding quality, safety, and efficiency in manufacturing environments.
