What is the difference between Welding Positions vs Pipefitters?

AspectWelding PositionsPipefitters
CertificationsWelding certifications (e.g., AWS)Pipefitting certifications (e.g., NCCER)
Work EnvironmentFabrication shops, construction sites, industrial plantsConstruction sites, industrial plants, maintenance
Industry UsageManufacturing, construction, shipbuildingOil & gas, power plants, plumbing

Welding positions focus on joining metal parts through various welding techniques, requiring welding-specific certifications. Pipefitters specialize in installing and maintaining piping systems, often requiring pipefitting certifications. While both roles work in industrial environments and may overlap on construction sites, welding positions primarily involve welding tasks, whereas pipefitters handle pipe installation and maintenance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in welding positions, and why are they important?

To thrive in welding positions, you need strong technical skills in various welding techniques, blueprint reading, and a high school diploma or GED, often supplemented by formal welding certifications. Familiarity with welding equipment, safety gear, and processes such as MIG, TIG, or arc welding is typically required. Attention to detail, manual dexterity, and effective communication are vital soft skills for quality work and teamwork. These competencies are crucial for producing safe, precise welds that meet industry standards and project requirements.

What are welding positions?

Welding positions refer to the various angles and orientations in which a welder must work to join metals together. The four main welding positions are flat (1), horizontal (2), vertical (3), and overhead (4), each presenting its own set of challenges and techniques. These positions are used to describe the welder's location relative to the workpiece, and mastering them is essential for creating strong, high-quality welds in different fabrication scenarios. Knowledge of welding positions is required for certifications and is fundamental in construction, manufacturing, and repair industries.

What are some common challenges welders face on the job, and how can they be overcome?

Welders often encounter challenges such as working in confined or awkward spaces, managing exposure to heat and fumes, and maintaining high-quality welds under tight deadlines. To overcome these, welders typically rely on proper safety gear, continuous training, and effective communication with supervisors and team members. Staying updated on the latest welding techniques and adhering to safety protocols can also help reduce risks and improve job performance.

What positions are there in welding?

Welding positions include flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead, each requiring different techniques and skills. Common roles are welder, pipe welder, structural welder, and fabrication welder, often requiring certifications such as AWS or ASME. Welders may work in construction, manufacturing, or maintenance environments, using tools like arc, MIG, TIG, or flux-cored welders.

Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.

This is an entry, mid or senior level GTAW (TIG) Welder position supporting a new advanced hardware program at Blue Origin. The successful candidate will work alongside experienced welders and manufacturing engineers to perform manual GTAW welding operations on aerospace-grade materials under direct supervision. This is a hands-on, learn-by-doing role in an early-phase manufacturing environment - you will develop your welding skills on hardware while building the foundational knowledge needed to advance as a welder.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Performing manual GTAW (TIG) welding operations on aerospace components under the direction of senior welders, following approved weld procedure specifications (WPS) and detailed work instructions

  • Preparing weld joints - cleaning, fitting, tacking, and positioning parts in fixtures and tooling per engineering drawings and process documentation

  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, and technical work instructions to understand joint configurations, material types, and acceptance criteria

  • Performing visual self-inspection of completed welds against workmanship standards; identifying and reporting defects such as porosity, undercut, lack of fusion, or excessive reinforcement to the lead welder or quality inspector

  • Setting up and maintaining GTAW welding equipment - selecting correct filler wire, tungsten electrodes, shielding gas, and machine parameters per the applicable WPS

  • Using hand tools and precision measuring equipment - calipers, fillet gages, weld inspection gages, and tape measures - to verify fit-up dimensions and weld profiles

  • Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area; adhering to all PPE requirements, safety protocols, welding ventilation standards, and housekeeping practices

  • Assisting senior welders with complex weld assemblies - positioning parts, purging back-side shielding gas, monitoring interpass temperatures, and handling post-weld operations such as grinding and blending

  • Participating in weld practice, qualification testing, and skills development activities to expand position and material certifications

  • Supporting material handling and shop operations - moving weldments, staging parts at work cells, and assisting with fixture setup and teardown

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED

  • 0-10 years of GTAW (TIG) welding experience in a manufacturing, fabrication, or vocational training environment; welding school or technical program coursework counts

  • Must be able to read and interpret basic engineering drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, and technical work instructions

  • Basic knowledge of GTAW welding fundamentals - joint types, filler metals, shielding gas selection, tungsten preparation, and machine setup

  • Must be able to pass a practical weld test (1G and 2G minimum) on carbon steel or stainless steel

  • Comfortable using hand tools and basic precision measuring equipment (calipers, tape measures, fillet gages)

  • Must be able to frequently lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs

  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and willingness to learn from experienced welders in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of a welding technology program from an accredited vocational school, community college, or trade school

  • AWS D17.1 awareness or entry-level GTAW certification on any material group

  • Exposure to welding on stainless steel, aluminum, or nickel-based alloys (Inconel, Haynes) in a training or production setting

  • Familiarity with Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) concepts - visual inspection criteria, dye penetrant, or radiographic testing acceptance standards

  • Familiarity with weld procedure specifications (WPS) and procedure qualification records (PQR)

  • Experience in aerospace, defense, automotive, or precision industrial manufacturing

  • Basic understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)

  • Ability to operate material handling equipment (forklift, crane, hoist)

  • Willingness to work varied shifts, weekends, and overtime as the production schedule requires

  • Experience with 5S methodology or lean workplace practices

Special Mentions

  • Relocation provided

  • Interviews will include a technical assessment

  • Multiple positions available
