Union Tank Car Company is seeking applicants to become a member of our production team at our full-service rail tank car repair shop in Muscatine, Iowa.Union Tank Car Company's regulatory, engineering, and commercialexpertisemake UTLX the preferred source of railcars and services for many of its customers. Owned by the Marmon Group and Berkshire Hathaway, UTLX headquarters is in Chicago's financial district, close to major public transportation hubs. Primary Job Functions

Primary responsibilities and/or essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Welds components related to tank cars including tanks, bolsters, underframes, side sills, etc.

  • Performs welded repairs byutilizingair arc cutting torch and stick or wire welding equipment.

  • Uses hand tools and equipment to chip and grind weld,slagor spatter.

  • Repairs, straightens, removes, reworks car parts, brakes, underframes, center plates, gears, couplers, valves, etc. using various hand and power tools.

  • Performs welding and mechanical repairs to tank and hopper cars whenrequired.

  • Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner andreportspotential hazards.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or the ability to pass a Combined Basic Skills Assessment Test

  • Must pass the applicable welding testas prescribed bythe company

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision

  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and assembly documents

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.

  • Ability to work any shift, including overtime, as permitted by the union contract

  • Dependable attendance and reliability

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an Industrial Repair or Manufacturing environment.

  • Rail industry experience

  • Tank car knowledge or experience

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Work is performed in an industrial railcar repair environment involves regular exposure to challenging physically demanding and environmental conditions.

  • Duties may be performed outdoors in varying weather conditions

  • Exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, heat, and noise is common

  • Job requires moderate to heavy physical exertion, including lifting, climbing, working at heights, and working in confined spaces

  • Must be able to enter tank cars through 20inch manway openings

  • Manual dexterity and physical coordination required for tool and equipment operation

  • Potential exposure to hazardous materials due to leaks or spills

  • Must comply with all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols

  • Vision correctable to 20/30 for inspection tasks

  • On-site work arrangement: 5 days a week, with overtime as required.
