Job description

The Master Plumber serves as the senior technical authority for plumbing systems across the FASTC campus. This role provides hands on expertise as well as supervisory oversight to ensure all plumbing work is performed safely, correctly, and in full compliance with applicable codes, standards, and contract requirements. The Master Plumber is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting potable water, wastewater, and related infrastructure in a secure, mission critical environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


• Provide technical leadership and direction to plumbing personnel, ensuring all work meets code requirements, manufacturer specifications, and performance standards.
• Oversee installation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution systems, wastewater systems, fixtures, valves, pumps, and associated components.
• Diagnose system failures, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to restore full functionality.
• Review and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documents to plan and execute plumbing tasks.
• Ensure proper testing of systems, including pressure tests, flow checks, and leak detection.
• Maintain compliance with state and federal plumbing codes, safety regulations, and facility specific procedures.
• Coordinate with other trades and facility teams to support integrated maintenance and repair activities.
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and system conditions.
• Provide guidance and mentorship to junior plumbers and maintenance staff.
• Support emergency repairs and after hours response as required to maintain operational readiness.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support facility operations.


EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND LICENSURE:


• Secret security clearance required or must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.
• Valid Master Plumber License for the state of Virginia (or ability to obtain prior to start).
• Minimum 8 years of experience in the plumbing trade, including work on complex systems in commercial, industrial, or government facilities.
• Demonstrated ability to supervise and evaluate the work of subordinate personnel.
• Strong knowledge of plumbing codes, maintenance procedures, and system diagnostics.
• Experience repairing and maintaining water and wastewater systems.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and maintenance manuals.
• Strong problem solving skills and the ability to work independently in a fast paced environment.
• Excellent communication and documentation skills.
• Commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and adherence to regulatory standards.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


• Prior experience in the supervision of a workforce responsible for operations, maintenance, and repair of commercial building infrastructure systems.

• Work requires the incumbent to walk, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in uncomfortable positions.

• Must be comfortable getting dirty, dusty, and greasy in an indoor or outdoor environment with frequent exposure to excessive noise.
• Must be able to perform duties under adverse weather conditions (extreme cold / heat, etc.).
• Must be able to work alternate shift schedules when necessary to meet the mission requirements of the customer, to include weekends and holidays.
• Must be able to perform on-call duties when scheduled and report to work within one hour of notification.
