Baystate Medical Center's Main Operating Room is seeking a Surgical Technologist to join our highly skilled surgical team in Springfield, Massachusetts. Our Main OR provides surgical services in a collaborative, fast-paced environment, supporting a broad range of complex inpatient and outpatient procedures. Team members work closely with surgeons, physicians, nurses, and other members of the surgical services team to deliver safe, effective, high-quality patient care.
Our newly renovated operating suites feature advanced technology and resources that empower our team to focus on what matters most-providing exceptional care and helping patients achieve the best possible surgical outcomes.
Department Overview
Baystate Medical Center's Main OR features:
  • 24 state-of-the-art inpatient and outpatient operating rooms.
  • 8 dedicated heart & vascular and neurology interventional procedure rooms.
  • A highly experienced and collaborative team supporting a broad range of complex surgical specialties.
  • Opportunities to work with advanced surgical technology while caring for patients whose lives are restored and enhanced through innovative procedures.

As part of a 24/7 surgical services department, team members participate in weekend, holiday, and off-shift rotation coverage, with rotation expectations occurring at least quarterly.
The Surgical Technologist Will:
  • Work under the direction of the Unit Manager, RN Clinical Operations Coordinator, and/or RN Service Leads and under surgeon/physician guidance to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures.
  • Apply expertise in aseptic technique, human anatomy, surgical procedures, instrumentation, and advancing surgical technologies to support safe patient care.
  • Anticipate the needs of surgeons and physicians through continuous attention to the surgical process and patient condition, helping promote safe, efficient, and quality surgical outcomes.
  • Function proficiently across a variety of surgical specialty services, supporting minimally invasive, invasive, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures.
  • Participate as an integral member of the operating team by understanding the patient's history, allergies, and intra-operative care plan.
  • Maintain a safe environment and sterile field while demonstrating knowledge of specimen handling, labeling, sharps safety, and intra-operative temperature regulation.
  • Safely operate, manage, and inspect designated equipment and instruments in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines and established policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of pharmacological agents dispensed to the sterile field, including recognition of mixtures, doses, and labels in accordance with department policies and procedures.
  • Accurately complete required documentation within the Surgical Technologist's scope of practice and maintain the knowledge and skills necessary to perform assigned responsibilities.

Surgical Technologist I
  • Associate of Science in Surgical Technology, or completion of a program accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education Association, or completion of a structured training program with a professional equivalent.
  • AST certification, when required. New hires will require certification if they had no experience in a surgical facility prior to July 1, 2013.
  • CPR - American Heart Association BLS.

Surgical Technologist II
  • Associate of Science in Surgical Technology, or completion of a program accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education Association, or completion of a structured training program with a professional equivalent.
  • AST certification, when required. New hires will require certification if they had no experience in a surgical facility prior to July 1, 2013.
  • CPR - American Heart Association BLS.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience, including 1 year of employment at Baystate Medical Center or 2 years of comparable experience and attainment of competency upon completion of orientation.

Surgical Technologist III
  • Associate of Science in Surgical Technology, or completion of a program accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education Association, or completion of a structured training program with a professional equivalent.
  • AST certification, when required. New hires will require certification if they had no experience in a surgical facility prior to July 1, 2013.
  • CPR - American Heart Association BLS.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience, including 1 year of employment at Baystate Health.
