Job description

Job Summary The Yuba County Sheriff's Department is currently recruiting to fill the position of Correctional Officer in the Jail and to establish an employment list. Under continuing supervision, incumbents will perform a wide variety of support in two areas: corrections, in which incumbents ensure the security, safety and care of individuals in custody; and bailiff, in which incumbents ensure the safety and security of the courts and their personnel during court proceedings; and perform related work as assigned. Incumbents may be assigned to either County Jail security or to Court security.

Qualifications The minimum and preferred requirements are listed below. While the following requirements outline the minimum qualifications, Human Resources reserves the right to select applicants for further consideration who demonstrate the best qualifications match for the job. Education and Experience: Correctional Officer: MINIMUM: Equivalent to graduation from high school and some college level coursework in criminal justice, administration of justice or related field from an accredited college or one (1) year of related work experience which has involved extensive public contact. PREFERRED: In addition to the minimum, the Standards and Training for Corrections (S.T.C.), Correctional Officer Core Course and/or at least one (1) year of paid or volunteer work experience in a correctional setting. Correctional Officer-Lateral: MINIMUM: In addition to the Correctional Officer minimum, possess a valid California Penal Code 832 certification, successfully completed the STC Certified Correctional Core Course, and at least one year of current, full-time paid corrections experience in an adult county, state, or federal correctional institution, which includes successful completion of a Jail Training Program and a probationary period

Licenses and Certification: Correctional Officer The ability to obtain a valid California Class C driver's license within ten (10) days of employment, maintain throughout employment. Possess or obtain first aid and CPR certifications. Possess or obtain California Penal Code 832 certification within six (6) months of hire.

Possess or obtain course work in jail operations. Correctional Officer-Lateral Possess a valid California Penal Code 832 certification. Successful completion of the STC certified Correctional Core Course.

Special Requirements: Positions in this classification are Peace Officers as defined in Section 830.1(c) of the California Penal Code, and must meet employment guidelines and standards established by the Commission for Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) for peace officers; the provisions of Sections 1029 and 1031 of the California Government Code; and the Standards and Training for Corrections (STC), Selection and Training Standards, as contained in Title 15, Sections 100-358, California Code of Regulations including passing a detailed background investigation in a fingerprint check, having no felony convictions, passing a medical and psychological exam, being at least 21 years of age by the time of appointment, being a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States. Work rotational shifts including evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts. Will be required to perform disaster service activities pursuant to Government Code 3100-3109. About the Sheriff's Department : The Yuba County Sheriff's Department is responsible for the administration of the Yuba County Jail and Jail staff.

The Mission of the Yuba County Jail is to provide safe, efficient, humane and secure custody of all persons incarcerated. The county prisoner population is made up of those who are sentenced to county jail, those serving state prison sentences in the county jail under AB109, and those who are pre-trial and who have not yet been sentenced. The jail provides a necessary link in the criminal justice system.

There are numerous programs operating within the facility including medical, kitchen, exercise, commissary, visiting, law library, inmate education, work programs, work furlough program, and inmate classification.
