Job description

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for overall engineering activities required to establish end-to-end fiber connectivity between locations.

Engineering Position Responsibilities:

  • Design and implementation of C.O., OSP and CPE facilities including field and GPS surveys, as well as, field survey staking, POTS, special circuits, subscriber and fiber carrier service design.
  • Design of FTTX, link loss budgets, for PON, Ethernet, and XDSL applications.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain all Engineering, Drafting and Facilities records, through work order preparation and processing, including design and closeout of facilities assignments.
  • Responsible for the operation of all applicable current computerized operations and CAD systems.
  • Responsible for preparation, acquisitions, processing and maintenance of all private and public, state and federal Rights-Of-Way and easement permit.
  • Responsible for development of Construction and cost estimates primarily for the outside plant including the upgrade of field electronics facilities, including XDSL’s, and digital carrier applications.
  • Responsible for developing status reports to management on a daily and/or weekly basis.
  • Develop process and maintain environmental reports, records and applications.
  • Prepare process, implement and maintain contracts, agreements and administration of construction forces and complete required inspection, quality assurance testing, invoice processing and contract closeouts.
  • Assist in the development of all departments and company budgets as required.
  • Assists in research and application of new technologies and products.

Engineering Essential skills and experience:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Able to perform work and duties independently as well as in a team environment
  • Outstanding communication (both written and verbal) and customer service skills
  • Detail orientation and organization skills
  • A thorough understanding of fiber design standards for underground and aerial construction
  • A thorough understanding of public right-of-way, private easements, existing utilities such as water, sewer, gas, electric, communication, and other underground and aerial utilities
  • GIS experience is a plus
  • Fiber counts and network layout experience a plus
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word), and Google Earth
  • Basic mathematical skills, e.g. averages, percentages
  • Must be able to sit long periods of time behind computer
  • Must enjoy working in a fast-paced and rapidly changing work environment
  • Ability to travel to complete field visits and/or meetings
  • Ability to prioritize and complete assignments accurately and in a timely manner

Physical Requirements:

  1. Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas.
  2. Must be able to clearly see color and shading in plans and materials.
  3. Must be able to lift and carry up to 80 pounds and push and/or pull 50-pound loads at a time.
  4. Must be able to stand and walk up to eight hours per day and climb multiple sets of stairs while carrying materials weighing between 40 and 60 pounds.
  5. Must be able to ride in a vehicle up to four hours to travel to and from job sites.
  6. Must be able to work in different temperatures and changing weather conditions.
  7. Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of jobsite in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching.
  8. Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers.
  9. Must have vision to allow differences in colors, shades and brightness.
  10. Must have flexibility in scheduling to meet the needs of the business.

Work Environment:

Good working conditions with the absence of disagreeable conditions, aside from travel. Must be able to work in OSP construction activities, including exposure to heavy equipment noise, dust, and able to work in summer or winter conditions.
