As of Aug 30, 2026, the average hourly pay for weekend welder in Tennessee is $18.29, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.86 and $22.69 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a weekend welder?

A Weekend Welder job involves performing welding tasks on a part-time basis, typically over the weekends. Responsibilities include joining, repairing, and fabricating metal components using various welding techniques such as MIG, TIG, or stick welding. These positions are common in manufacturing, construction, and repair industries where extra labor is needed on weekends. It’s a great option for those looking to earn extra income or gain experience while working another job during the week.

What typical projects or responsibilities might a weekend welder handle, and how independent is the work?

As a Weekend Welder, you may be tasked with fabricating, repairing, or assembling metal structures, often working on projects that require quick turnaround outside standard business hours. Weekend shifts tend to involve more independent work, as there may be fewer supervisors or support staff on site, making self-motivation and problem-solving essential. You will generally follow blueprints or work orders, ensure weld quality inspections, and maintain a safe work area. Collaboration with other weekend staff or contractors may occur for larger projects, but much of your role will involve working autonomously to meet production or repair goals by the end of the weekend.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the weekend welder position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Welder, you need solid welding skills, attention to safety protocols, and experience with various metals and fabrication techniques, often backed by a high school diploma or a welding certification. Familiarity with MIG, TIG, or stick welding equipment, as well as the ability to read blueprints and use measuring tools, is crucial in this role. Strong time management, reliability, and good communication skills help ensure efficiency and clear coordination, especially since weekend shifts can be more independent. These abilities enable Weekend Welders to complete high-quality work on tight timelines, meeting employer expectations safely and effectively.

Do weekend welders usually work weekends?

Weekend welders often work on weekends, especially if the job requires around-the-clock or project-based schedules. Many welding positions offer flexible hours, but working weekends is common for meeting deadlines or maintaining production flow.

Job description

Job Title: WelderJob Description

This role focuses on MIG welding trailer components using a variety of welding processes while maintaining high standards of safety, precision, and quality. You will prepare and align parts, perform welds on carbon steel, inspect completed work for defects, and ensure all work orders meet established quality requirements. You will also keep your workstation and equipment organized, clean, and in proper working condition.

Responsibilities
  • Use MIG welding techniques to weld trailer components, including gas metal arc, plasma arc, and shielded metal arc processes on carbon steel materials.
  • Safely set up, use, and operate welding gear and related equipment in accordance with safety procedures and best practices.
  • Examine workpieces for defects, blemishes, and overall quality, promptly report any concerns, and perform necessary repairs.
  • Use measuring tapes, combination squares, and levels to lay out, position, align, and secure parts accurately before assembly.
  • Monitor fitting, burning, and welding processes to prevent overheating, warping, shrinking, distortion, or unwanted expansion of materials.
  • Sign off on completed work orders to confirm accuracy, completeness, and quality of work performed.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workstation, including regular cleaning and basic care of welding equipment.
  • Participate in welding and fabrication tests as part of ongoing skills verification, including flat, vertical downhill, and overhead welds.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and team members during interviews, testing, and training to support continuous improvement and development.
Essential Skills
  • Proficiency in MIG welding, including gas metal arc, plasma arc, and shielded metal arc processes.
  • Ability to perform quality welds on carbon steel, including flat, downhill vertical, and overhead welds.
  • Strong ability to read and use a standard tape measure accurately down to 1/16 of an inch (without easy readers or modified tapes).
  • Skilled in using measuring tools such as tape measures, combination squares, and levels to lay out and align parts.
  • Capability to monitor welding parameters, including wire speed and voltage, to achieve desired weld quality (such as approximately 700 wire speed at 24.5 volts with 0.035 bare wire).
  • Attention to detail in inspecting workpieces for defects and ensuring consistent quality standards.
  • Commitment to following safety procedures when operating welding gear and equipment.
  • Ability to maintain an organized, clean, and safe workstation in a fabrication and welding environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Comfort working with custom-fabricated products, such as specialized trailer components.
  • Willingness to participate in a multi-step hiring process, including fabrication testing, interviews with HR and supervisors, and welding tests.
  • Interest in ongoing training and development supported by supervisors and cross-department collaboration.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including A and B (weekend) shifts, as required by production needs.
Why Work Here?

Employees join a team that takes pride in crafting fully custom products and celebrates that craftsmanship with special events, such as catered summer and Thanksgiving gatherings with prizes. The organization demonstrates genuine care for its people, offering thoughtful touches like chilled beverages, ice cream, and popsicles during hot weather to support morale and comfort. Supervisors from each department actively participate in the hiring and development process, reflecting a strong commitment to training, collaboration, and long-term growth. Flexible A and B shift options, along with clear performance incentives and frequent internal promotions, create an environment where employees can build stable careers, develop their skills, and be recognized for their contributions.

Work Environment

The work environment is a hands-on fabrication and welding setting where each trailer is custom built, requiring precision and attention to detail. Candidates complete a structured weld test and interview process that includes a fabrication test to read a standard tape measure down to 1/16 of an inch, an interview with HR and a supervisor, and a welding test on carbon steel involving flat, downhill vertical, and overhead welds. Welding parameters may include a wire speed around 700 at 24.5 volts with 0.035 bare wire. The facility is not climate-controlled, but the team actively supports comfort with chilled beverages, ice cream, and popsicles during hot weather. Work is organized into A and B (weekend) shifts, with the weekend B shift consisting of three 12-hour days from Friday to Sunday. Weekend employees receive a shift differential for each hour worked, an attendance incentive that adds extra paid hours when they arrive on time and complete their full shifts, and overtime pay for hours beyond 36 when attendance requirements are met. This environment emphasizes safety, accuracy in measurement, strong welding skills, and a supportive culture focused on employee well-being and performance.
