Role Objectives:  The Vessel Manager is responsible for coordination of vessel operations and associated financials to ensure efficient operations and reimbursements. This includes communication with customers and related parties, expense management, and oversight of required documentation.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate, train and supervise agents, including performance and development; make recommendations regarding hiring, firing, and pay
  • Manage and monitor functions relative to cargo operations and vessel activity, including updates, documents, funds requests, and inquiries
  • Secure funds and extend lines of credit as needed
  • Calculate proforma disbursements and prepare final disbursement accounts and billing instructions for accounting staff
  • Communicate port information to customers and principals, and oversee customer updates
  • Act as agent for companies, ship owners and ship operators to ensure that safety regulations and other policies and procedures are followed
  • Anticipate and resolve issues to reduce vessel movement delays
  • Ensure all documentation is completed and continually verify Quality System, including writing System Improvement Forms (SIFs) as needed
  • Learn duties of and assist Port Manager, as needed
  • Attend maritime meetings, visit terminals, and perform sales calls locally
  • Other duties as assigned
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Simple math, accounting and basic statistics skills required
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays and to be on call 24/7 in case of emergency
  • Familiar with various types of vessels
  • Familiar with local port areas
Education/Experience:

  • At least some college, ideally in Marine Administration or Business or another related field AND
  • At least 2 years of prior experience as a Full Agent and knowledge of port and terminal regulations required
  • OR Equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements: 

  • Required to ascend and descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps; reach; stand; walk; talk; and hear
  • Must exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects
  • Close visual acuity is required to perform activities such as analyzing figures, viewing a computer terminal, extensive reading, visual inspection, and using measurement devices
  • Worker is subject to environmental conditions both inside and outside, with no effective protection from weather, with sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout to be heard, and to physical hazards, such as moving parts, vehicles, electricity, heights, and large bodies of deep water
