What does a weekend tutor do?

Weekend tutors help students with their homework, school projects, or understanding specific lessons in a subject. In this role, you primarily work on Saturdays and Sundays, though some employers may consider Friday evenings part of the weekend. The tutoring may focus on one field or on many subjects. This part-time position lets you work with others to develop positive study habits and help them to understand the material better. Weekend tutors may work with groups of students or offer private, one-on-one sessions, and may be in-person or conducted through virtual portals. The age of students you work with depends on your level of expertise; some focus on elementary, middle, or high school students, while others tutor at the college level.

What is a weekend tutor?

Weekend tutors are educators who offer academic support and instruction to students during weekends, outside of regular school hours. They often help students catch up on coursework, prepare for exams, or improve specific subject skills. Weekend tutors may work independently, through tutoring centers, or online platforms, providing flexible learning opportunities for students with busy weekday schedules.

Both roles require similar credentials and are used across various educational settings, but Weekend Tutors typically work on weekends exclusively, while Part-Time Tutors have more varied schedules.

What are the typical responsibilities and expectations for a weekend tutor, and how do they differ from weekday tutoring roles?

As a Weekend Tutor, your primary responsibilities include preparing and delivering individualized or small-group lessons, assessing student progress, and providing targeted feedback. Unlike weekday tutors, weekend tutors often work with students who require flexible scheduling due to extracurricular activities or school commitments during the week. You may also be expected to provide more intensive sessions or support for test preparation. Collaboration with parents and regular communication regarding student progress are key aspects of the role, and you may work independently or as part of a tutoring center team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend tutor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Tutor, you need strong subject matter expertise, teaching ability, and often a bachelor's degree or relevant certification. Excellent communication, patience, and motivational skills help create a supportive learning environment and engage students. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering effective instruction and fostering student success during limited weekend sessions.

Job description

Role Overview
Thrive Education Partners is seeking an exceptional Middle School Tutor to join our growing team of educators. This role offers the opportunity to build a consistent roster of students over time, with assignments matched to your availability, expertise, and location.
This role is designed for an educator who believes that meaningful learning happens through strong relationships, thoughtful instruction, and individualized support. You'll work one-on-one with middle school students, helping them strengthen academic skills while building the confidence, organization, and independence they need to thrive both in and beyond the classroom.
We're looking for someone who is polished, highly organized, intellectually curious, and genuinely enjoys partnering with students and families. If you love tailoring your teaching to each learner, take pride in your professionalism, and find purpose in helping students grow over time, we'd love to meet you.
What You'll Do
  • Provide engaging, one-on-one instruction in middle school English Language Arts and/or mathematics.
  • Design personalized lessons that strengthen foundational skills while supporting each student's long-term academic growth.
  • Explicitly teach executive functioning skills, including organization, planning, time management, study strategies, and self-advocacy.
  • Adapt your instruction to each student's learning style, strengths, and areas for growth.
  • Build students' confidence while maintaining appropriately high expectations and encouraging increasing independence.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust instruction based on ongoing assessment and observation.
  • Communicate professionally with families, sharing thoughtful updates, insights, and recommendations that support continued growth.
  • Prepare lessons, organize instructional materials, and manage academic planning with care and attention to detail.
What Makes Someone Successful
You will thrive in this role if you:
  • Build authentic relationships with students while providing clear structure and accountability.
  • Enjoy personalizing instruction rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.
  • Are patient, encouraging, and genuinely invested in helping students become more capable and confident learners.
  • Have strong executive functioning yourself and can model organization, planning, and follow-through.
  • Communicate professionally and proactively with both students and families.
  • Bring warmth, discretion, reliability, and excellent judgment to every interaction.
Why Thrive
At Thrive Education Partners, we believe exceptional educators can transform a student's relationship with learning. Our tutors do far more than help with homework-they build confidence, strengthen foundational skills, and help students become more independent learners.
As part of our team, you'll have the opportunity to work with thoughtfully matched students, develop lasting relationships with families, and expand your schedule with additional placements that fit your availability and expertise. We value educators who are committed to excellence, passionate about individualized instruction, and excited to make a meaningful impact one student at a time.
Requirements
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Middle School Education or a related field.
  • At least 1 year of teaching experience or tutoring students in grades 5-8.
  • Strong experience in middle school English Language Arts or math.
  • Experience communicating professionally with families through brief progress updates, regular written session notes, and consultative recommendations about learning strategies and next steps.
  • Eligible to work in the United States.
  • Available to commit to a consistent weekly weekend tutoring schedule with reliable in-person availability in the greater Nashville area.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Current or former classroom teacher, learning specialist, interventionist, or educational therapist.
  • Ability to tutor both middle school ELA and math.
  • Experience working with students with ADHD or executive functioning challenges.
  • Experience working with students with dyslexia or other learning differences.
  • Background in structured literacy.
  • Holds an active, valid secondary ELA/Math teaching certification.
  • Available on Saturday afternoons.

Benefits
Compensation
  • $50-$90 per hour, commensurate with experience, credentials, and placement scope

Work Environment
  • One-on-one or small-group instruction -- no classroom management overhead
  • Deep, ongoing relationships with students and families rather than high-volume throughput
  • Schedule flexibility that mirrors the academic calendar you design together
  • Opportunity to teach the way you believe learning actually works

Support
  • Personalized matching -- Thrive vets families thoroughly before introductions, so your time is spent with qualified, serious clients
  • Access to Thrive's educator network, resources, and ongoing placement opportunities
  • Long-term career development: many of our educators build lasting careers across successive placements
