ANCC Magnet designated UPMC Passavant is currently hiring a Full-Time Surgical Technologist to support our Operating Room on the weekends at the McCandless location.The OR at Passavant is an exciting and fast paced environment where learning never stops! Salary will be determined based upon experience.

Shift Details:

  • Saturday & Sunday
  • 7am - 7:30pm
  • No call
  • Will work holiday only if they fall on the weekend


Responsibilities:

  • Recognized by surgeons as exceptionally qualified and able to anticipate surgical needs, working efficiently alongside the surgical team throughout procedures
  • Serve as a preceptor and resource for surgical technicians, students, and new employees, teaching both technical skills and theoretical principles.
  • Perform scrub duties, including maintaining aseptic technique, selecting and sterilizing instruments, setting up surgical procedures, passing instruments and sutures, securing supplies, and storing equipment.
  • Coordinate day-to-day supervision of Surgical Technicians and serve as the lead resource to address questions and resolve issues during assigned shifts.
  • Prepare the operating room prior to procedures by assembling sterile and non-sterile equipment, setting up instruments, drapes, solutions, and ensuring equipment is functioning properly.
  • Prepare patients for surgery by washing, shaving, and ensuring aseptic incision sites; assist with patient transport, positioning, and draping as needed.
  • Assist the surgical team with sterile gowning and gloving procedures.
  • During surgery, pass instruments and sterile supplies, hold retractors and instruments, cut sutures, sponge or suction operative sites, and assist with counts of sponges, needles, instruments, and supplies under surgeon supervision.
  • Assist with the preparation, handling, and disposal of laboratory specimens and application of surgical dressings.
  • Ensure all medications are properly labeled and provided to the surgeon in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Assist with patient transfer to recovery areas following procedures and clean and restock operating rooms.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment through adherence to safety practices, aseptic technique, and awareness of potential hazards.
  • Promote cost-effective use of supplies and equipment.
  • Demonstrate initiative in resolving patient care and technical issues to support efficient operating room functions.
  • Under the direction of the Clinician, coordinate repairs, maintenance, and ordering of supplies, equipment, lasers, and instrumentation related to the specialty service.
  • Assist the Clinician in overseeing the safe and effective use of supplies and equipment for patient care.
  • Collaborate effectively with surgeons, specialty team members, and other departments while demonstrating excellent communication skills.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and assist with implementation.
  • Maintain advanced knowledge in a specific surgical specialty or broad expertise across multiple specialties.
  • Completion of a formal surgical technician program offered by a community or junior college, vocational school, university, hospital or the military.
  • 4 years of current Operating Room experience required.
  • Advanced knowledge of at least 3 surgical specialists, must have 24/7 accountability in 1 or more of the following specialties: Cardiac Surgery (including Heart Transplant), Neurosurgery, Thoracic Lung Transplant, Transplant (Liver/Kidney), Trauma (General).
  • Must be a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on last performance evaluation.
  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.
    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Certified Surgical Technologists (CST) OR Tech in Surgery-Certified (TSC)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
