Position Overview
The Content Developer 2 - Instructional Design / Multimedia Training is responsible for planning, designing, developing, and delivering audiovisual and text-based online instructional content that supports employee learning, technical proficiency, and job performance.
This position combines instructional content development with professional multimedia production.
The Content Developer will independently plan and conduct field media-collection activities, including photography, videography, audio recording, and potentially 3D scanning at commercial and industrial facilities.
The successful candidate will then organize, edit, and integrate collected media with technical procedures, SME knowledge, and existing training materials to create professional step-by-step instructional modules using approved software platforms and established standards.
This role requires an individual who is equally comfortable working behind a computer editing content and working in the field with cameras, microphones, PPE, technical personnel, and industrial equipment.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Training Content Planning & Development
  • Collaborate with Learning & Development instructional designers, stakeholders, and subject matter experts (SMEs) to identify training and performance needs.
  • Determine project objectives, target audiences, priorities, and instructional requirements.
  • Review existing instructional materials and technical documentation.
  • Translate technical processes and field activities into clear, concise, step-by-step instructional content.
  • Develop online learning modules using approved content-development platforms.
  • Ensure finished instructional products support employee learning and job performance.
  • Recommend appropriate media and content approaches based on project objectives.
  • Maintain alignment with established instructional, technical, and visual standards.

Stakeholder & SME Collaboration
  • Meet with SMEs and business stakeholders remotely and in person.
  • Participate in and/or lead content-gathering meetings.
  • Gather project requirements and clarify stakeholder expectations.
  • Ask appropriate questions to accurately capture technical processes.
  • Work directly with field personnel to document real-world work activities.
  • Facilitate content-review sessions.
  • Incorporate stakeholder feedback throughout the development process.
  • Validate technical accuracy before finalizing instructional content.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with customers, business partners, SMEs, instructional designers, and leadership.

Field Media Collection
A significant component of this position involves traveling to Southern Company and customer field locations to collect professional audiovisual content.
Responsibilities include:
  • Traveling to commercial and industrial facilities.
  • Planning field media-collection activities.
  • Coordinating with local points of contact.
  • Capturing professional still photography.
  • Recording high-quality video.
  • Recording clear field audio.
  • Capturing interviews, demonstrations, processes, and technical activities.

  • Produce finished deliverables that conform to established technical and style standards.

Technical Instructional Content Development
Work with instructional designers and SMEs to develop training content for technically complex activities.
Responsibilities may include:

  • Replace outdated images or video.

3D Scanning Support
Some projects may require capturing 3D scans of commercial or industrial facilities using company-provided equipment and software.
Responsibilities may include:
  • Learning and operating designated 3D scanning equipment.
  • Coordinating scanning activities with facility personnel.
  • Capturing spatial information in industrial environments.
  • Organizing and processing scan data.
  • Supporting integration of 3D assets into instructional content.

Prior 3D scanning experience is beneficial but may not be required.
Project Management & Communication
The Content Developer will independently manage multiple content-development initiatives.

The Content Developer will coordinate logistics associated with field-production assignments.

  • Preparing audiovisual equipment.
  • Transporting equipment to field locations.
  • Confirming facility-access requirements.

  • Ensuring equipment is functional before field assignments.

Field sessions may occasionally occur outside normal business hours based on facility operations and the work being documented.
Safety & Compliance

Before entering commercial or industrial facilities, the Content Developer may be required to complete:
