A Weekend Smash My Trash operator is a person who operates specialized mobile compaction equipment to compress commercial waste in dumpsters, typically working on weekends. Their main job is to drive to client locations, use the Smash My Trash machine to compact trash, and help businesses save money by reducing the number of waste hauls. Operators are trained to safely maneuver the equipment and follow company protocols to ensure efficient and safe operations. This role is ideal for individuals seeking part-time or weekend work, often requiring a valid driver’s license and good customer service skills.

To thrive as a Smash My Trash Operator, you generally need a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL), basic mechanical aptitude, and a good driving record. Familiarity with operating industrial compactors, GPS routing systems, and safety procedures is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, reliability, and effective communication help operators handle customer needs and unexpected challenges on the job. These abilities ensure efficient, safe, and customer-focused waste compaction services, which are critical for maintaining client satisfaction and operational safety.

Job description

Who We Are:

Butler Plus is a leading provider of doorstep trash, pest control, porter services, bulk and junk removal, sustainability solutions, and pressure washing for multifamily communities across the country. We currently service more than 350,000 units across 1,200+ communities nationwide and are known for delivering reliable service, strong operational support, and an elevated experience for both residents and property teams.

Butler Plus has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, TIME Magazine, and on CNBC. We take pride in hiring professional team members who make a difference every day and in fostering a culture built around our five Core Values: Figure It Out, Champion of Change, Do the Right Thing, Never "Not My Job," and Expect Excellence.

Who You Are:

As a Full-Time Butler – Flex, your primary focus is daytime labor — bulk and junk removal jobs at assigned communities. You will work five days a week on a flexible schedule that generally starts between 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM depending on the job board for that day, with some shifts extending into evening hours and/or starting earlier as needed such as 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM, 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM, or some other variation. Most of your time will be spent loading, hauling, and disposing of bulk items, supported by porter work, pressure washing, and other Additional Services. When doorstep trash coverage is needed, you step in. This is a "Never Not My Job" role for someone who likes to stay busy, works hard physically, and wants variety instead of the same route every night.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Bulk & Junk Removal (Primary Focus)

  • Perform bulk and junk removal jobs at assigned communities — furniture, mattresses, appliances, e-waste, construction debris, and resident move-out leave-behinds — including removal from upper-level units (stairs required)
  • Load bulk items safely onto a truck or trailer, secure the load, and transport to the designated landfill, transfer station, or disposal site
  • Unload, document, and close out each disposal run, including weight tickets and disposal receipts where required
  • Meet your supervisor or District Operations Manager at the job site as scheduled, and work as part of a two-person team on jobs that require it
  • Identify and correctly report items that cannot be taken — hazardous materials, biohazard, oversized or immovable items — and log the correct reason in our proprietary system
  • Confirm job scope on arrival and escalate any variance between the quoted scope and the actual load to Operations Management before starting

Additional Services Support

  • Perform additional daytime services as assigned, which may include but are not limited to porter service, pressure washing, pet station waste removal, compactor and dumpster area clean-up, breezeway and common area cleanliness, and light grounds work
  • Collect trash and recyclables from resident doorsteps as needed to cover service gaps, using a leak-proof tote to transport waste to your vehicle and then to the designated compactor or disposal site
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety standards at the compactor and dumpster area before completing your shift
  • Respond to same-day service requests, service gaps, and emergencies as directed by Operations Management

Documentation & Communication

  • Log service documentation, before-and-after photos, and job completion into our proprietary system in real time
  • Communicate professionally with on-site property management teams and residents
  • Report property conditions, safety hazards, and potential additional service opportunities to Operations Management
  • Work collaboratively with Operations Management to sequence the day’s jobs and confirm the next day’s assignments

Safety & Equipment

  • Use proper lifting technique and team lifts for heavy or awkward items; use straps, dollies, and ramps as provided
  • Wear all required PPE, including gloves, safety footwear, and high-visibility apparel
  • Inspect the vehicle, trailer, straps, and equipment before and after each shift and report any issues immediately
  • Secure every load before transport and comply with all state and local hauling and disposal requirements
  • Immediately report any accidents, injuries, property damage, or near-miss incidents

Schedule & Hours:

  • Flexible daytime shifts typically start between 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM based on the day’s job board, with some shifts running into evening hours or starting earlier as needed.
  • 5 days per week; days may vary by market and job volume
  • Shifts average 8 hours; typically, 40 hours per week, with the potential for additional days based on availability and performance
  • 2 weekends on call per month
  • Same-day and next-day job assignments are common — flexibility and reliable communication are essential
  • Must be willing to travel outside of primary location as needed

Position Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Prior experience in hauling, moving, junk removal, landscaping, warehouse, construction, or similar physical labor preferred
  • Prior experience delivering high-quality customer service, ensuring client satisfaction and retention
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate ideas clearly and effectively
  • Comfortable using a smartphone to receive assignments, capture photos, and complete job documentation
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and auto insurance with a good driving record
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and motor vehicle record review

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Physically demanding outdoor work in all weather conditions
  • Able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds individually, and heavier items with team assistance
  • Repeated bending, squatting, climbing stairs, and loading and unloading for extended periods
  • Walking the distance of a property multiple times per shift
  • Driving for extended periods between communities and disposal sites
  • Exposure to household waste, dust, and debris — PPE required and provided by the company

Benefits, Perks, and Culture:

  • Competitive base salary
  • Healthcare Plans (Medical, Dental, Vision, Life)
  • 401k Company Matching Plan, after 90 days of employment
  • Maternity, Paternal, and Additional Leave Options
  • Flexible Personal Time Off (PTO)
  • Monthly Car Wash and Gas Stipend for using personal vehicle or a Fleet vehicle (company owned)
  • Fun and collaborative work environment with training and a feedback-rich culture.
