Security Specialist

Job Classification: Classified, part-time (32 hours per week)

Hiring Range: $22.78 - $28.48 per hour

Job Summary: As the Security Specialist, you will support the Library's mission by ensuring the safety of customers and staff as well as compliance with the District's policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. Your role will be supervised by the Security Supervisor and will take daily direction from the Library Branch Manager.

Essential Duties + Responsibilities Including the following:

  • Creates a welcoming environment for all customers and staff that fosters equity, diversity, and inclusion by seeking to understand, respect, and value individual differences.
  • Demonstrates tactful and conscientious service to people of all ages, races, abilities, cultures, and genders.
  • Greets Library and Library Park users with courtesy and respect.
  • Responds to directional inquiries and refers library service questions to appropriate staff.
  • Conducts routine patrols during hours of operation including inside the library, perimeter of the buildings, and throughout Library Park and Webster House Administration Center.
  • Helps manage incidents in the library and park that do not require police assistance.
  • Assists with opening and closing, making sure the building is cleared and secured.
  • Enforces customer and staff compliance with general safety and security policies and procedures; responsible for in-depth knowledge and implementation of the DERP (Disaster and Emergency Response Plan).
  • Responds to and investigates disturbances on library property; escorts customers who are not following policies and procedures out of the library.
  • Writes clear and detailed incident reports.
  • Maintains customer and staff confidentiality within local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Maintains current safety training and certification, including but not limited to: CPR, AED, Narcan training, etc.
  • Stays current on Poudre Libraries policies, processes, procedures, events, and technologies required to perform work duties.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills + Abilities To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Must possess excellent customer service experience and skills, including deescalating difficult patrons and navigating occasional volatile situations.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with a diverse population, co-workers, and supervisor.
  • Work shifts vary and occur during all library operating hours, including a combination of mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekdays, and weekends (both Saturdays and Sundays). Ability to work during all library operating hours is required.
  • Knowledge of the Poudre Library District's policies and procedures and ability to follow them.
  • Knowledge of standard security practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid and proper use of an AED.
  • Ability to use and operate computer software, including MS Office, email, security camera, and patron incident tracking.
  • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgement when making quick decisions in emergency situations.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively organize daily work under general supervision.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret policies, procedures, or governmental regulations.

Education + Experience High school diploma or equivalent (e.g. GED) is required. Two years of related experience is desirable. Must be at least 21 years of age by employment start date. Possession of a valid driver's license is required.

Certificates + Licenses The following safety certifications are required or the ability to become certified upon employment:

  • CPR
  • AED
  • Narcan Training

Language Abilities Ability to read, speak, and communicate in English fluently is required. Conversational ability in Spanish or other languages is desirable.

Supervisory Responsibilities This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment + Physical Demands The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed and/or required to:

  • Work shifts vary and occur during all library operating hours, including a combination of mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekdays, and weekends (both Saturdays and Sundays). Ability to work during all library operating hours is required.
  • Work primarily in a public library environment and sometimes in community settings.
  • The demands on the visual sense are very high.
  • Regularly sit, stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel, lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, talk and hear.
  • Occasionally reach, lift and move arms above shoulder level.
  • Occasionally lift and move materials weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, or balance.
  • Concentrate on and complete tasks in the presence of distractions.
  • Regularly operate a variety of standard office equipment including a computer, laptop and/or tablet PC, telephone, copy and fax machines.
  • Continuous and repetitive arm, hand, and eye movement.
  • Moderate to loud noise levels.
  • Travel to/from meetings and various locations.
  • Work shifts vary and occur during all library operating hours.
