Weekend Retired Mechanical Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Retired Mechanical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Retired Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, problem-solving skills, and typically a degree in mechanical engineering with prior professional experience. Familiarity with CAD software, engineering analysis tools, and industry safety standards is often required. Strong communication, adaptability, and mentoring abilities help you collaborate with teams and share expertise. These skills ensure you can provide valuable technical insight, troubleshoot issues efficiently, and support ongoing engineering projects even on a part-time basis.

What types of projects or tasks are typically assigned to a weekend retired mechanical engineer?

Weekend retired mechanical engineers are often brought in to provide expert consultation on specialized projects, troubleshoot complex mechanical issues, or mentor less experienced staff during critical phases. Their work may involve reviewing designs, offering process improvements, or conducting safety assessments. These roles are typically part-time and project-based, providing flexibility while allowing the engineer to make significant contributions based on their experience. Collaboration with full-time engineering teams and project managers is common, ensuring knowledge transfer and effective problem-solving.

What does a Weekend Retired Mechanical Engineer do?

A Weekend Retired Mechanical Engineer is a professional who, after retiring from a full-time engineering career, works part-time or consults on weekends. They may assist with troubleshooting, project reviews, mentoring junior engineers, or providing specialized expertise to ongoing projects. This role allows retired engineers to stay engaged in the field, share their knowledge, and contribute to engineering projects on a flexible schedule. It can be a rewarding way to remain active professionally while enjoying retirement.

What is the best part-time job after retirement?

A retired mechanical engineer can pursue part-time roles such as consulting, tutoring engineering students, or working as a technical advisor. These jobs leverage their technical skills and experience, often offering flexible schedules and the ability to work remotely or on a project basis.

What is the difference between Weekend Retired Mechanical Engineer vs Part-Time Mechanical Technician?

AspectWeekend Retired Mechanical EngineerPart-Time Mechanical Technician
CredentialsEngineering degree, possibly PE licenseTechnical diploma or certification
Work EnvironmentConsulting, mentoring, or hobby projectsManufacturing, maintenance, or repair settings
Industry UsageEngineering firms, manufacturing companiesFactories, workshops, service centers
Work ScheduleLimited to weekends, voluntaryFlexible, part-time hours during weekdays or weekends

Weekend Retired Mechanical Engineers typically leverage their extensive engineering background for consulting or hobby projects on weekends, while Part-Time Mechanical Technicians perform hands-on technical tasks in industrial settings. The former often involves advisory roles, whereas the latter focuses on maintenance and repair work. Both roles may share similar credentials but differ in work environment and daily responsibilities.

Job description

Hermeus is a venture-backed defense aviation company reclaiming the lost art of rapid iterative prototyping to build the fastest aircraft in the world today. By prioritizing relentless hardware iteration, we deliver high-speed systems at the pace of the modern battlefield. We work with the Department of War to provide the high-speed capabilities our nation and its allies need to maintain a durable, asymmetric advantage.
We are seeking a Mid-Career Mechanical Engineer to support the design, build, and test of next-generation aircraft aerostructures, including fuselage, empennage, control surfaces, and landing gear systems. This role is hands-on and execution-oriented, with responsibility for taking hardware from concept through detailed design, fabrication support, and test validation.
Responsibilities
  • Own R&D-focused structural design and development supporting vehicle subsystems such as hydraulics, fuel systems, propulsion, and avionics, with an emphasis on rapid prototyping and iteration
  • Perform first-principles structural and thermal analyses using hand calculations and FEA to inform early design decisions and experimental validation
  • Execute trade studies across mechanical, fluid, and avionics subsystems focused on performance, mass efficiency, and technical risk reduction
  • Design, build, and test prototype hardware, owning development from concept through fabrication, integration, and experimental validation
  • Collaborate closely with manufacturing and test teams to transition prototype concepts toward scalable, production-aware designs
  • Support hands-on integration, troubleshooting, and test campaigns to quickly iterate and mature hardware
  • Present technical findings in internal design reviews and contribute to cross-functional and supplier/customer technical discussions

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or physics
  • 2+ years of experience in mechanical design, analysis, and experimental testing (internships and significant student project experience qualify), preferably in an R&D or prototype environment

Preferred Skills
  • Strong hands-on experience with rapid prototyping, hardware build, and mechanical assembly of complex systems
  • Solid foundation in engineering fundamentals including statics, dynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and vibration
  • Proficiency in CAD (NX preferred), FEA (Ansys preferred), and PLM tools (Teamcenter preferred)
  • Experience designing and testing hardware in early development environments, with awareness of design-for-manufacturing and production considerations
  • Familiarity with mechanical testing under vibration, fatigue, shock, vacuum, and thermal loads
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplines (fluids, avionics, manufacturing) to deliver integrated experimental systems
  • Proven ownership of technically complex projects from concept through test and iteration

Additional Requirements
  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed to support critical development milestones
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time

$90,000 - $140,000 a year
