The University of Miami/UHealth Department Dermatology has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Research Associate 1, to work in Miami, FL.The Research Associate 1, SOM supports research activities for the assigned division by conducting laboratory experiments on assigned research projects. Moreover, the incumbent operates with the goal of advancing his/her expertise through continued education, training, and research.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Understands and interprets research protocols and procedures.
  • Participates in the publication of significant results.
  • Maintains an overview of relevant research findings.
  • Ensures all research is undertaken according to good research practice.
  • Keeps abreast of current publications relative to methods, techniques, and developments within the area of research.
  • Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens or tissue cultures.
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.
  • Performs a variety of routine assays, tests, and studies.
  • Performs calculations to complete research test results, collects data, and performs statistical analysis of laboratory results.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions
  • The Research Associate 1, SOM will work on funded skin research projects under the supervision of the lab head (Principal Investigator/PI) and senior staff.
  • The lab uses multiple lines of transgenic mice with skin phenotype to understand human skin disorders. S/he is expected to handle the mice, collect samples, and maintain the mouse colony upon training.
  • S/he is expected to be a responsible professional and pay attention to detail. Upon training, s/he needs to be able to carry out experiments independently by following established protocols.
  • S/he should have background knowledge in biology/chemistry/cell biology/genetics and have had hands-on lab experience (as a credit requirement or research experience or employment). S/he needs to know how to make solutions and dilutions, and do so safely, upon training.
  • S/he will use a variety of model systems (in vitro, in vivo and ex vivo) and techniques to carry out DNA, RNA, protein and histology (tissue sectioning, staining, imaging) analyses.
  • S/he needs to maintain well-organized, dated, detailed, and up-to-date laboratory notes, both physical and electronic, which serve as a record of the rationale, experimental design, materials and procedures used, any changes to the work as performed, results, data analysis and interpretation, and suggestions for future experiments.
  • S/he will help prepare manuscripts, presentations, grants, etc., and help to train other personnel.
  • S/he will help with general lab maintenance (e.g., maintaining equipment, keep the lab tidy).
  • S/he needs to adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant field (e.g., one in biological sciences or chemistry)
  • No prior experience required
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
  • Commitment to the University's core values.
