What is a weekend remote storage engineer?

Weekend Remote Storage Engineers are IT professionals responsible for managing and maintaining data storage systems during weekends, typically working remotely. Their duties include monitoring storage infrastructure, troubleshooting issues, performing backups, and ensuring data integrity and availability outside standard business hours. This role is crucial for organizations that require 24/7 data access and support, especially to address any urgent storage-related problems that may arise during weekends when regular staff may not be available. Weekend Remote Storage Engineers often work with cloud storage solutions, SAN/NAS systems, and enterprise backup technologies.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges faced by a weekend remote storage engineer?

As a Weekend Remote Storage Engineer, your primary responsibilities include monitoring storage systems, performing routine maintenance, and resolving incidents or outages that occur outside regular business hours. You'll often work independently but will coordinate with on-call teams or escalate critical issues as needed. A key challenge is quickly diagnosing and resolving problems with limited direct supervision, requiring strong troubleshooting skills and familiarity with remote management tools. This role also offers the opportunity to gain experience with various storage technologies and can serve as a stepping stone to more advanced infrastructure or cloud engineering positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend remote storage engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Remote Storage Engineer, you need a solid background in IT infrastructure, storage technologies (such as SAN, NAS, and cloud storage), and experience with troubleshooting and maintenance, typically backed by relevant certifications like CompTIA Storage+ or vendor-specific credentials. Familiarity with storage management tools (e.g., NetApp, Dell EMC, HPE), remote monitoring systems, and incident ticketing platforms is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication enable you to resolve issues efficiently and collaborate with distributed teams. These capabilities are crucial for ensuring storage systems' reliability, data integrity, and seamless support during off-hours.

MUST BE A US CITIZEN

Location: REMOTE

Senior Storage Engineer (NetApp & Azure NetApp Files)

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Storage Engineer to lead the architecture, design, implementation, and operational support of enterprise storage platforms across both on-premises and Microsoft Azure environments. This position is intended for a senior-level technical expert capable of independently designing, deploying, and optimizing complex storage solutions with minimal oversight.

The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience with NetApp ONTAP and Azure NetApp Files (ANF), understands enterprise infrastructure architecture, and can translate business and technical requirements into scalable, secure, and highly available storage solutions. This individual will serve as a technical leader, provide architectural guidance, mentor junior engineers when needed, and drive engineering best practices across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, architect, implement, and support enterprise NetApp storage solutions for mission-critical workloads.
  • Design and implement Azure NetApp Files (ANF) solutions following Microsoft and NetApp architectural best practices.
  • Develop scalable storage architectures supporting high availability, disaster recovery, performance optimization, and business continuity.
  • Lead storage modernization initiatives, including migration of workloads from traditional on-premises storage to Azure NetApp Files.
  • Design storage networking, capacity planning, replication strategies, backup integration, and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Configure and manage NetApp ONTAP clusters, Storage Virtual Machines (SVMs), aggregates, volumes, snapshots, SnapMirror, SnapVault, and related technologies.
  • Perform advanced performance analysis and troubleshooting across storage, networking, virtualization, and operating system layers.
  • Administer storage using both NetApp System Manager and the ONTAP CLI.
  • Develop automation where appropriate using PowerShell, Bash, REST APIs, or Infrastructure-as-Code methodologies.
  • Create and maintain engineering standards, architecture diagrams, operational procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Participate in architectural reviews and provide technical recommendations for enterprise infrastructure initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Azure architects, Linux administrators, Windows engineers, database administrators, virtualization teams, and cybersecurity personnel.
  • Provide Tier III/IV engineering support for complex production issues.
  • Evaluate emerging storage technologies and recommend improvements that enhance reliability, security, scalability, and operational efficiency.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of enterprise storage engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on NetApp ONTAP administration and architecture.
  • 3+ years of hands-on Azure NetApp Files (ANF) engineering and architecture.
  • Demonstrated experience designing enterprise storage architectures from concept through production implementation.
  • Expert knowledge of NetApp ONTAP architecture and administration.
  • Extensive experience with storage replication, snapshots, cloning, disaster recovery, and data protection strategies.
  • Strong Linux administration experience, including command-line management, storage provisioning, file systems, permissions, and performance analysis.
  • Experience administering enterprise storage using the NetApp ONTAP CLI and management interfaces.
  • Strong understanding of NFS, SMB/CIFS, iSCSI, and enterprise storage protocols.
  • Experience supporting VMware, Hyper-V, Kubernetes, or enterprise virtualization platforms.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills across storage, operating systems, networking, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Ability to produce architecture documentation, technical designs, implementation plans, and operational procedures.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with Azure Arc
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Bicep, ARM, or similar)
  • Experience with automation using PowerShell, Bash, Python, or REST APIs
  • Experience supporting SQL Server, Oracle, SAP, or other enterprise applications hosted on NetApp storage
  • Familiarity with enterprise backup platforms such as Commvault, Veeam, or Rubrik

Professional Competencies

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Ability to work independently with little to no supervision.
  • Strong initiative and ownership of assigned projects from design through implementation.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to make sound engineering decisions in complex enterprise environments.
  • Strong communication skills with both technical and executive audiences.
  • Proven ability to lead technical initiatives and influence architectural direction.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to engineering excellence, documentation, and operational discipline.

Preferred Candidate Profile

This role is intended for a senior engineer—not an entry-level administrator. The successful candidate will be a recognized technical expert who:

  • Requires minimal guidance or day-to-day direction.
  • Is a self-starter who proactively identifies problems and develops solutions.
  • Can independently architect, implement, and support complex enterprise storage environments.
  • Is comfortable making technical recommendations and defending architectural decisions.
  • Takes ownership of projects and follows them through completion.
  • Continuously evaluates new technologies and recommends improvements aligned with organizational goals.
  • Serves as a trusted technical advisor for enterprise storage strategy.
