Family Law Contract Attorney

Part-time, Contractor

Job description

Family Law Of Counsel Attorney (Contract)

MUST BE AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE VIRGINIA STATE BAR IN GOOD STANDING TO BE CONSIDERED.

Divorce litigation leaves everyone worse off. There is a better way to practice.

If you are a skilled Virginia family law attorney committed to a healthier, part-time way to practice and looking for a meaningful, high-impact contract opportunity that prioritizes collaboration, client well-being, and flexibility, Chowdhury Divorce Law Group is the place for you. We are a fully remote firm serving clients across Northern Virginia and are seeking an experienced attorney for a consistent, flexible, part-time role.

Why Attorneys Contract with Chowdhury Divorce Law Group

We are looking for a dedicated counsel attorney to provide high-quality legal support on a flexible, part-time basis.

  • Contract Rate: $75 - $150 per hour

  • Target Hours: 10-20 hours per week, offering excellent flexibility for your existing schedule

  • Fully Remote: While the position is fully remote, candidates must be locally based in Northern Virginia to handle court appearances when necessary

  • Support: Access to firm systems and support staff (paralegals, admin staff, and leadership accessibility) to ensure efficiency and focus on legal work

  • Collaboration: Join a supportive team dedicated to collaborative strategy and reducing conflict

Note: As this is a contract position, the attorney will not receive firm benefits, including health insurance, paid time off, or 401(k) contributions.

Our Approach to Family Law

At Chowdhury Divorce Law Group, we believe that how a case is handled matters as much as how it resolves. Every decision we make, from the first client call to the final order, is guided by a commitment to resolution over conflict and long-term stability over short-term wins.

For a contract attorney, this commitment means focusing your limited, high-value time on work that promotes resolution:

  • Leading with Negotiation. A client comes in ready to fight for the house, the retirement accounts, and primary custody, all at once. Rather than building a litigation strategy around every demand, you take time to understand what they actually need to move forward. You help them prioritize, and you open a channel with opposing counsel that makes a negotiated resolution possible.

  • Setting the Right Tone Early. You are retained on a new custody matter. Before filing anything, you reach out to opposing counsel to introduce yourself and signal a cooperative intent. That one call changes the dynamic of the entire case.

  • Keeping the Focus on Resolution. You are reviewing a draft motion and notice language that is more inflammatory than necessary. You revise it, not because the facts do not support it, but because you know that escalating the tone will cost your client more time, money, and stress than it is worth.

  • Knowing When Court Is the Right Tool. A settlement negotiation has broken down, and your client's interests cannot be protected without judicial intervention. You move forward with confidence and preparation, because going to court when necessary is not a failure of the approach. It is part of it.

Compensation:

$75 - $150 hourly

Responsibilities:
  • Lead client consultations to understand their needs and guide them toward amicable resolutions.
  • Draft, review, and revise legal documents with a focus on clarity and resolution.
  • Collaborate with opposing counsel to foster a cooperative and productive negotiation environment.
  • Prepare for and represent clients in court when necessary, ensuring their interests are protected.
  • Maintain open communication with clients, providing updates and managing expectations effectively.
  • Utilize firm resources and support staff to enhance efficiency and focus on high-value legal work.
  • Participate in team strategy sessions to develop innovative approaches to case management and resolution.

Qualifications:
  • MUST BE AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE VIRGINIA STATE BAR IN GOOD STANDING TO BE CONSIDERED.
  • Minimum 5 years of Virginia family law experience.
  • Experience handling a range of family law matters, including divorce, custody, visitation, support, enforcement, and modifications to existing orders.
  • Demonstrated strength in negotiation and settlement strategy, with a practice philosophy that treats court as a last resort, not a first response.
  • Strong legal research, drafting, and written communication skills.
  • Clear, confident verbal communication with clients and opposing counsel.
  • A genuinely client-centered approach, with the ability to guide clients toward decisions that serve their long-term interests, not just their immediate impulses.
  • Proven ability to manage a part-time workload, meet deadlines, and work independently in a remote environment while maintaining consistent communication.
  • Mediation training or collaborative law certification is a plus.

We handle divorce, custody, child support, spousal support, and related matters for families, including those with unique considerations involving military service and federal employment.

We believe the best outcomes for families are built through negotiation, not won through conflict. We are building a firm where attorneys can practice at a high level, stay well-supported, and do work that genuinely matters.
