Catering by Michaels, one of Chicago's premier catering companies, is hiring a Pastry Sous Chef to join our award-winning team. Known for our 100% scratch kitchen, creative menus, and sustainable practices, we bring unforgettable food to Chicago's most exciting events.
Role Overview
The Pastry Sous Chef supports the Executive Pastry Chef in leading our pastry department, ensuring high-quality production, recipe development, and staff supervision. This is a hands-on role blending leadership with production responsibilities in a fast-paced, high-volume kitchen.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily pastry production and quality control
  • Scale, prepare, and produce recipes to exact standards
  • Train, mentor, and supervise pastry staff
  • Develop new recipes and contribute to seasonal menus
  • Manage inventory, purchasing needs, and scheduling
  • Ensure sanitation, safety, and compliance standards
  • Support off-site catering events and peak business periods
Qualifications
  • 2+ years of progressive pastry or baking experience (catering, hotel, or fine dining preferred)
  • Leadership skills with ability to train and motivate staff
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Hands-on, collaborative approach to kitchen management
  • Working knowledge of Spanish preferred
  • Flexible availability: mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays
