Weekend Ramp Trainer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Ramp Trainer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Ramp Trainer, you need extensive knowledge of ramp operations, safety procedures, and prior experience in ground handling, often supported by relevant certifications like OSHA or IATA safety training. Familiarity with ground service equipment, radio communication systems, and training software is typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and the ability to effectively coach and motivate diverse teams are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure safe, efficient ramp operations and help maintain high standards of training and compliance in a fast-paced airport environment.

Weekend Ramp Trainers focus on training staff and ensuring safety on airport ramps, often requiring certifications like forklift operation. Weekend Warehouse Associates handle inventory and shipping tasks in warehouse settings. Both roles require safety training but differ mainly in environment and responsibilities.

What are Weekend Ramp Trainers?

Weekend Ramp Trainers are specialized aviation professionals who provide training and guidance to ramp agents and ground crew, primarily during weekend shifts. Their responsibilities include instructing staff on safe and efficient aircraft handling, baggage loading, de-icing, and other ground operations. They ensure that all ramp activities are performed in compliance with airline and airport safety regulations, often serving as mentors and supervisors for newer employees. Weekend Ramp Trainers play a crucial role in maintaining safety standards and operational efficiency during peak travel periods, which often occur on weekends.

What are some common challenges faced by Weekend Ramp Trainers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Weekend Ramp Trainers often face the challenge of balancing tight training schedules with fluctuating flight operations, especially during peak travel times. They must ensure that all new ramp agents are thoroughly trained in safety and operational procedures, often while managing limited resources and variable weather conditions. Effective communication, adaptability, and strong organizational skills are key to overcoming these challenges. Building a supportive rapport with trainees and coordinating closely with other airport teams also helps ensure training runs smoothly and safely.

Job description

About Switch

At Switch, we donโ€™t just design, build and operate data centersโ€”we are enabling the technology of the future. Led by Founder & CEO, Rob Roy, we believe in revolutionary innovation, operational excellence and the principle of karma. Switch is where talented people come together to EVOLVE the digital world.

We believe that innovation isnโ€™t just about technologyโ€”itโ€™s about the people, culture, and purpose that make it happen. Every Switch team member contributes to a mission greater than themselves: to create the worldโ€™s most advanced digital infrastructure that powers the progress of humanity.

The Role: Network Infrastructure Supervisor

This role leads the day-to-day execution of network infrastructure operations within a Switch data center. You supervise technicians on shift, ensure work is completed safely and correctly, and act as the first point of escalation for operational issues. Your focus is consistency, service quality, and keeping the team aligned to established processes in a 24/7 environment.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Supervise daily work for Network Infrastructure Technicians and ensure tasks are completed according to procedure.

  • Serve as the first escalation point for urgent network infrastructure issues during assigned shifts.

  • Ensure consistent use of policies, procedures, and safety standards.

  • Perform quality checks on completed work and address gaps in execution or documentation.

  • Support shift scheduling and coverage planning to meet operational demand.

  • Track and document basic performance metrics and provide updates to management.

  • Interpret and respond to mission-critical alerts, escalating issues when required.

  • Ensure tools, test equipment, and materials are available, maintained, and inventoried.

  • Provide hands-on coaching and on-the-job training for technicians.

  • Support interviewing, onboarding, and ramp-up of new team members.

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of network spaces, including meet-me rooms and IDFs.

  • Travel locally or domestically when required to support business needs.

What Weโ€™re Looking For
  • You are comfortable directing day-to-day work and making routine operational decisions.

  • You communicate clearly, especially during incidents or escalations.

  • You hold people accountable to standards while remaining fair and consistent.

  • You stay calm under pressure and focus on resolution rather than blame.

  • You support your team by removing obstacles and reinforcing good habits.

What Youโ€™ll Bring

Required

  • 2+ years of experience in a supervisory or team lead role.

  • Background in network infrastructure, data center operations, or IT support.

  • Working knowledge of structured cabling standards, power, cooling, and fault tolerance.

  • Ability to troubleshoot hardware and layer 1 connectivity issues.

  • Experience supervising technical staff in a shift-based environment.

  • Ability to work nights, weekends, or rotating shifts as needed.

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience using ticketing and monitoring systems.

Preferred

  • CompTIA A+, Network+, or Security+ certification.

  • Experience with terminal access tools such as PuTTY or SSH.

  • Familiarity with monitoring tools such as Syslog, Nagios, or similar platforms.

  • Cisco or other role-relevant certifications.

Working Conditions and Requirements
  • On-site work in secure data center environments.

  • Ability to work in non-office temperature conditions.

  • Ability to safely lift and move equipment using proper tools and procedures.

  • Willingness to follow and enforce all safety practices and training requirements.
