What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend PVD Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend PVD Process Engineer, you need a solid background in materials science or engineering, with experience in thin film deposition processes and a relevant degree such as a BS or MS in engineering or physics. Familiarity with semiconductor fabrication tools, process control systems, and statistical process control (SPC) software is typically required, along with knowledge of PVD equipment. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure precise process optimization, minimal downtime, and collaboration, which are crucial for maintaining high-quality production during weekend shifts.

What are the typical challenges faced by a Weekend PVD Process Engineer, and how can they be effectively managed?

Weekend PVD Process Engineers often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting equipment issues with limited on-site support, balancing multiple process improvement projects, and maintaining consistent production quality during off-peak hours. Effective management of these challenges involves strong problem-solving skills, clear communication with weekday teams to ensure seamless handoffs, and proactive planning for preventive maintenance. Building a solid understanding of process documentation and collaborating closely with technicians and operators during weekend shifts can also help address issues quickly and maintain productivity.

What are Weekend PVD Process Engineers?

Weekend PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) Process Engineers are specialized engineers who work primarily on weekends to oversee and optimize the PVD manufacturing processes, commonly used in semiconductor and electronics production. They are responsible for maintaining equipment, troubleshooting issues, ensuring product quality, and implementing process improvements during weekend shifts when production is ongoing. These engineers play a critical role in maximizing uptime and efficiency during non-standard work hours, supporting continuous manufacturing operations.

Job description

Our vision is to transform how the world uses information to enrich life for all.

Micron Technology is a world leader in innovating memory and storage solutions that accelerate the transformation of information into intelligence, inspiring the world to learn, communicate and advance faster than ever.

The High-Volume Manufacturing Area Manufacturing Engineering team plays a key role in keeping Micron's wafer fabs running safely, efficiently, and at scale. We work at the center of manufacturing execution, balancing capacity, risk, and performance to support both development and high-volume production goals. If you enjoy solving complex operational challenges in a fast-paced environment, this is the place to make an impact!

This role focuses on strengthening Physical and Chemical Vapor Deposition (PVD and CVD) manufacturing performance by reducing operational risk and building stable, predictable capacity. You'll work closely with Manufacturing, Process Development, Industrial Engineering, and Operations to improve cycle time, throughput, and redundancy while supporting aggressive program timelines. Your work directly influences fab performance and development success.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify and resolve systemic Physical and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD and PVD) area issues affecting throughput, cycle time, and operational risk

  • Drive area performance using clear metrics, risk assessments, and data-informed capital decisions

  • Partner with Industrial Engineering, Process Development, Manufacturing, and Operations to evaluate capacity scenarios and mitigation plans

  • Lead safety and quality efforts including audits, good catches, and human QDR follow-up

  • Analyze operational data to communicate trends, risks, and improvement opportunities

  • Through strong leadership, optimally collaborate with stakeholders to drive projects, lead strategic meetings and drive capacity management

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Operations Management, or Supply Chain

  • Minimum 2+ years of experience in semiconductor equipment capacity planning or area process engineering

  • Strong knowledge of fab operations, capacity planning, floor scheduling, and line management systems

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and continuously learn in a dynamic environment

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting Physical and/or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD or PVD) processes

  • Experience developing or deploying area-level operational management tools or techniques

  • Background validating planning assumptions or supporting area-level strategic planning

  • Experience driving consistent manufacturing procedures across cross-functional teams
