How much do weekend psychiatrist jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 15, 2026, the average yearly pay for weekend psychiatrist in the United States is $259,497.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $212,000.00 and $317,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges faced by a weekend psychiatrist?

Weekend Psychiatrists primarily provide psychiatric assessments, medication management, crisis intervention, and ongoing patient support during weekend hours, often in hospital, clinic, or telehealth settings. They may handle more acute cases due to limited weekend resources and occasionally consult with other medical staff or emergency teams. Challenges can include managing high patient volumes, addressing urgent mental health needs, and coordinating care with limited onsite staff. However, this role offers the opportunity to make a significant impact and often includes flexible scheduling to balance work-life needs. Collaboration and adaptability are key to success in this unique weekend role.

What field of psychiatry makes the most money?

In psychiatry, subspecialties such as forensic psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and consultation-liaison psychiatry tend to have higher earning potential due to specialized skills and demand. Psychiatrists working in private practice or in high-demand urban areas often earn more, especially those with board certification and extensive experience. Overall, subspecialty training and geographic location significantly influence income levels for psychiatrists.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the weekend psychiatrist position?

To thrive as a Weekend Psychiatrist, you need a medical degree with board certification in psychiatry, comprehensive knowledge of psychiatric disorders, and experience in patient assessment and medication management. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, telepsychiatry platforms, and state licensure are essential for efficient practice. Strong interpersonal skills, crisis management abilities, and a calm, compassionate demeanor help you connect with patients and support them during stressful times. These skills ensure high-quality care is delivered efficiently, especially when covering weekend shifts that may involve acute or urgent cases.

What is a weekend psychiatrist?

A Weekend Psychiatrist is a licensed medical professional who provides psychiatric care exclusively on weekends. They assess, diagnose, and treat patients with mental health conditions through therapy, medication management, or both. This role is ideal for psychiatrists seeking part-time work, flexibility, or supplemental income. Weekend Psychiatrists often work in hospitals, clinics, or telehealth settings to support patients who need care outside regular weekday hours.

Do weekend psychiatrists have to work weekends?

Weekend psychiatrists are typically required to work during weekends as part of their scheduled shifts, especially in settings like hospitals or urgent care clinics that operate 24/7. Their schedules often include weekend and holiday coverage to ensure continuous patient care, and they may need to be on call outside regular hours depending on the facility's policies.
