Job description

The Senior Tax Manager assists the Director of Tax and Treasury with tax compliance, financial reporting, audits and controversy, tax savings efforts, and tax automation projects. This position reviews and approves tax work papers, returns and payments, evaluates tax implications of business decisions and new legislation, supports executive reporting, manages tax audits, and directs the activities of the sales tax and licensing department. The Senior Tax Manager reports to the Director of Tax and Treasury.

Responsibilities Included
  • Assisting the Director of Tax & Treasury with all tax functions including compliance, controversy, tax saving, and financial reporting.
  • Reviewing and approving tax work papers, return filings, payments, journal entries, account analysis work papers, tax provisions, and year‑end audit work papers and disclosures
  • Evaluating new and proposed tax legislation and tax implications of new markets and business decisions
  • Preparing executive reports, memos, and financial account information related to tax payments, controversy, and accounting
  • Leading tax automation projects, including identifying requirements, developing work plans, researching vendors, supporting RFPs, testing and implementing software, coordinating training, and managing vendor relationships
  • Managing tax audits and controversy, including amended returns, non‑routine tax adjustments, information document requests, proposed courses of action, meetings with tax officials, and settlements
  • Assisting with tax savings projects by reviewing opportunities, assisting with strategy execution, approving applications and filings, and reviewing summaries for executive reporting
  • Directing sales tax and licensing department activities, including coaching and mentoring associates, overseeing compliance planning and resources, and supporting staffing and performance recommendations
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent experience
  • 10 years of relevant business experience
  • Certified Public Accountant
  • knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws, rules, and regulations
  • knowledge of industry trends and best tax practices
  • basic knowledge of accounting principles and ASC 740
  • knowledge of business practices related to taxing authorities within numerous jurisdictions
  • knowledge of tax compliance technology
  • basic knowledge of Income Tax Provision Software
  • intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, and Excel,)
  • ability to work extended hours and/or weekends during significant financial accounting and tax reporting periods
  • ability to comprehend and interpret tax law
  • ability to maintain confidentiality and work independently
  • ability to adapt to change
  • strong project management and analytical skills
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • problem solving and task management skills
  • strong interpersonal and negotiation skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Accounting with an emphasis in Tax or MBA with concentration in Accounting
  • 15 years of relevant business experience, including five (5) years of associate supervision experience
  • knowledge of the Publix payroll process and SAP HR and FI modules
  • knowledge of business processes related to accounting, specifically asset accounting, and filing requirements
  • knowledge of property tax assessment methodologies and practices related to appealing real and tangible personal property tax assessments
  • knowledge of state taxing authority requirements, including sales tax rules related to warehouse and manufacturing operations, sales tax rules related to real versus tangible property, and sales tax audit procedures and protest rights
  • knowledge of the expense payables invoice payment process
  • knowledge of Publix department structures
