Weekend Programming information

What is weekend programming?

Weekend programming refers to the practice of coding, software development, or working on programming-related projects during the weekends, rather than as part of a standard weekday job. This can include pursuing personal projects, contributing to open-source software, participating in hackathons, or taking on freelance work. Many programmers use weekends to improve their skills, explore new technologies, or work on side hustles. Weekend programming is popular among both hobbyists and professionals who want to expand their experience or build their portfolios.

In contrast, Weekend IT Support focuses on troubleshooting and maintaining IT systems, often needing IT-specific certifications. Both roles are typically part-time weekend positions but differ in skills, environment, and industry focus.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend programmer?

To thrive as a Weekend Programmer, you need solid programming skills in languages like Python, Java, or JavaScript, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and project management tools is important for efficient workflow. Strong time management, self-motivation, and effective communication are crucial soft skills to balance weekend work and coordinate with teams or clients remotely. These abilities enable consistent productivity, high-quality code output, and successful project delivery within tight or non-traditional schedules.

What are some common challenges faced in a weekend programming role, and how can I prepare for them?

Weekend programming positions often require balancing tight deadlines and troubleshooting technical issues with limited weekday support. You may need to work independently, manage unexpected bugs, and coordinate remotely with team members who are off-duty. To prepare, strengthen your problem-solving skills, ensure you are comfortable with documentation, and proactively communicate project updates before and after your shifts. Familiarizing yourself with the company’s codebase and support protocols will also help streamline your workflow during weekend hours.

Description

Impact Automation is a fast-growing company which supplies industrial equipment to the E-Commerce market. When you click "buy-it-now," Impact Automation technology is used to bring packages and parcels from the warehouse to your door.

We are looking for smart, hard-working folks who want to shine in a small company environment. At Impact, we all wear lots of hats, work together, and count on each other. Candidates must have technical skills and will be expected to contribute right away.

We have full-time and part-time positions available in our Columbia office, some of which are perfect for students/second jobs/semi-retired. We also have positions which require travel with plenty of potential to earn overtime pay. A competitive benefit package is available for full time employees.

Are you ready to make an Impact - with your career, with our company, in your world? If so, please apply today!

Project Engineer

Are you organized, decisive, adaptable, and good at finding solutions when a problem arises? If working from electrical schematics and mechanical drawings is your thing, and you also enjoy working directly with the customer, you might be the Project Engineer we are looking for.

At Impact, the Project Engineer works hard, leads others, gets results, and reports directly to the general manager. Therefore, the ability to accept responsibility and accountability for your actions, as well as promoting a positive image of the company and striving to solve issues raised by customers, are important character traits.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Participate on bid and proposal activities. Ensure that the requirements of the request for proposal are met in the preparation and documentation of bids and proposals.

Review technical contract requirements (i.e. statement of work) and break-down a project into detailed smaller tasks.

Manage and direct the daily execution of multiple projects within contract requirements to ensure that cost, schedules, and performance goals are met.

Lead all communication with customer (verbal / written). Must be willing to take calls after hours and on weekends as required.

Lead all meetings related to client's projects, both internal and external, from kick-off through project close.

Review multiple quotes for technical components and initiate purchase requisitions based on bills-of-material, drawings, or configuration.

Manage the engineering drawings, documentation packages, material flow, production schedule, and installation schedule to ensure all deliverables will be ready on time and the install team will be on-site to ensure the project is completed on time and on budget.

Lead the resolution of installation challenges (technical and operational).

Assess, monitor, and mitigate risk throughout the project life cycle. Effectively communicate and report material status and any installation issues.

Estimate and communicate to customer any scope changes outside the original contract.

Obtain management approval prior to executing scope changes without a contract modification.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

B.S. or B.A. in Engineering or a related field from an accredited university or equivalent work experience.

Minimum of 5 years of Project Engineering experience or related technical experience.

Previous experience with commonly used project management and supervision concepts, practices, and procedures.

Proficient at working from electrical schematics and mechanical drawings.

Proficient with MS Project, MS Office Suite and AutoCAD.

Effective communication (verbal and written).

Ability to build strong relationships with engineering groups, customers, suppliers, and subcontractors.

Must be detailed oriented, organized, and able to meet deadlines.

Must be a self-managed individual who is a team player.

Able to travel extensively (30%), work weekends, holidays and overtime when required.

All candidates must be able to climb ladders and lift 50 lb boxes. A track record of success is required - advanced degrees are not. The successful candidate will be required to provide documentation demonstrating the right to work in the United States upon hire and subject to the E-Verify program.
