What are weekend programmers?

Weekend programmers are individuals who primarily write, develop, or maintain software during weekends rather than as a full-time weekday job. They might do this to pursue personal projects, contribute to open-source software, or supplement their income with freelance work. Weekend programmers can be professionals seeking extra experience, students learning new skills, or hobbyists enjoying coding in their spare time. This flexible schedule allows them to balance programming with other commitments or interests.

What are some typical challenges faced by Weekend Programmers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Weekend Programmers often face challenges such as balancing tight deadlines with limited work hours, staying aligned with weekday teams, and managing communication gaps. To overcome these, it's important to maintain clear documentation, proactively communicate updates, and leverage collaboration tools to stay in sync with full-time colleagues. Setting clear priorities and expectations with your manager can also help ensure your contributions have maximum impact within the available time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Programmer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python, JavaScript, or Java, and a solid understanding of software development principles. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), code editors, and possibly cloud platforms or collaborative tools is common. Effective time management, self-motivation, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for balancing part-time coding with other commitments. These skills enable consistent productivity, quality code delivery, and successful collaboration on weekend or short-term software projects.

What Are Weekend Jobs for a Programmer?

As a weekend programmer, you work part-time on Saturday-Sunday to complete computer programming responsibilities. Your duties may require you to develop software programs, code program designs into a language a computer understands, test systems to ensure they are working correctly, and install computer updates. You may communicate with software developers as well as the client to ensure efficient translation and development of the program. Some programs may be developed in a couple of days, while other jobs may require multiple weekends to complete. The programs you create may be used for phone applications, operating systems, or websites. A weekend programmer may work for a company or provide freelance services.

Job Title: CNC Programmer Machinist
Job Description

This role focuses on programming and supporting CNC machining operations in a dynamic job shop environment that manufactures and distributes mechanical seals and related components. You will create CNC programs using Esprit, support machinists on 5-axis CNC machines, and work with a wide range of materials and part sizes for the seals and pump industry.

Responsibilities

  • Program CNC machines using Esprit CAM software on a laptop for a variety of parts in a job shop environment.
  • Develop and optimize programs for 5-axis CNC equipment, including both mill and lathe configurations.
  • Work directly with machinists on the shop floor to set up, troubleshoot, and run 5-axis CNC machines.
  • Operate and support CNC machines with Okuma and similar controls, ensuring efficient and accurate production.
  • Interpret and work from blueprints and technical drawings to ensure parts meet dimensional and quality requirements.
  • Machine parts ranging from approximately 2 inches to 20 inches in diameter, including thin-wall components with extremely tight ID and OD tolerances.
  • Work with a variety of materials, including 316 stainless steel, carbon steel, Inconel, titanium, and other exotic alloys.
  • Apply strong knowledge of G and M codes to adjust, refine, and troubleshoot CNC programs as needed.
  • Assist with manual machining on mills and lathes when required to support production needs.
  • Perform or support quality control inspections to verify that parts meet specifications and tolerances.
  • Communicate clearly and consistently with team members using tools such as Microsoft Teams to coordinate work and resolve issues.
  • Work autonomously and take ownership of programming tasks, from concept through to successful production runs.
  • Support second shift as needed by staying later to help resolve machining and programming issues.
  • Contribute to maintaining an organized, process-driven, and safe shop environment.
Essential Skills
  • 10+ years of CNC programming experience in a job shop environment.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with 5-axis CNC machines, including both mills and lathes.
  • Proficiency with Esprit CAM software for CNC programming.
  • Strong working knowledge of G and M codes for CNC programming and troubleshooting.
  • Experience programming and operating CNC machines with Okuma or similar advanced controls.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings accurately.
  • Demonstrated experience with CNC lathes, CNC mills, 3-axis and 5-axis machines, and mill-turn operations.
  • Proficiency in CNC lathe programming and CNC mill programming for both vertical mills and horizontal lathes.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate using Microsoft Teams.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously, remain self-driven, and manage tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Hands-on machining experience in a production or job shop setting.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with additional CAM software such as Mastercam is beneficial.
  • Background with Okuma Multus or similar advanced mill-turn equipment.
  • Manual mill and manual lathe experience to support non-CNC operations.
  • Mill-turn experience, including complex, multi-axis machining strategies.
  • Knowledge of the mechanical seals industry and seal-related components is a plus.
  • Familiarity with programming CNC equipment across various axes and machine types.
  • Comfort working with a wide range of materials including stainless steel, carbon steel, Inconel, titanium, and exotic alloys.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail in a fast-paced job shop environment.
