Weekend Producer information

What does a weekend producer do?

A Weekend Producer is responsible for overseeing the production of news programs or segments that air on weekends. Their duties typically include coordinating with reporters, editors, and technical staff to ensure smooth broadcasts, selecting stories, managing breaking news coverage, and ensuring all content meets editorial standards. Weekend Producers also handle last-minute changes and make critical decisions under tight deadlines. Their role is essential in maintaining high-quality news coverage when regular weekday staff may not be present.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend producer?

To thrive as a Weekend Producer, you need strong editorial judgment, news writing or scriptwriting abilities, and experience in broadcast journalism, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with newsroom software, video editing tools, and content management systems is typically required. Exceptional organizational skills, the ability to multitask under tight deadlines, and clear communication make someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure timely, accurate, and engaging news coverage during high-pressure weekend shifts when staffing and resources may be limited.

What are the unique challenges faced by a weekend producer, and how can I effectively manage them?

As a Weekend Producer, one unique challenge is the need to coordinate coverage and content with a leaner staff, as fewer team members are typically available on weekends. You may also need to make quick editorial decisions during breaking news situations without immediate access to senior management. To be effective, strong organizational skills, the ability to multitask, and clear communication are essential. Building solid relationships with your team and preparing well during the week can help ensure smooth weekend broadcasts.

Job description

JOB TITLE: Line Producer
LOCATION: Miami

ABOUT THE ROLE & TEAM:

The Network News team at TelevisaUnivision is looking for a Line Producer to join our team! This is a chance to help shape one of our daily news programs for N+Univision, streaming 24/7 on our hit platform ViX.

The Line Producer will be responsible for managing the production of daily shows, supporting the Executive Producer with preproduction and team management - and will also play a role in our special programs, beyond the daily news cycle. This role carries real editorial weight: you won't just be executing a rundown, you'll be shaping it - bringing sharp news judgment, sourcing strong stories, and making the split-second calls that define how our audience experiences the news.

ABOUT YOU:

If you have strong sharp instincts for breaking news, knowledge of TV production and a genuine passion for journalism, this role is for you.

YOUR DAY-TO-DAY:

  • Own the daily rundown - story selection, placement, and editorial direction, with a strong voice in what makes the show and why.
  • Bring sound news judgment to every decision: vetting sources, assessing newsworthiness, and shaping the editorial angle of each story.
  • Execute the timing of live shows from the control room, making confident, last-minute calls under pressure.
  • Work closely with the Associate Producer and/or Graphics Producer on the development and production of daily news graphics.
  • React quickly to breaking news, adjusting the show in real time to keep our coverage first and accurate.
  • Participate in special news programming and coverage, beyond the daily shows, including field coordination.
  • Maintain close communication with the assignment desk, production, and technical crews to keep every show running seamlessly.
  • Back-time shows and adjust rundowns effortlessly while on air.
  • Flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.

YOU HAVE:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Journalism or Communications.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience line producing/producing.
  • Strong news judgment and a deep, current knowledge of the news landscape.
  • Experience with social media platforms.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish, written and oral.
  • Knowledge of iNews or similar newsroom systems (e.g., Dalet).

OUR BENEFITS:

TelevisaUnivision believes that a happy, well-balanced employee is what makes our culture thrive. We offer a wide selection of perks and benefits including PTO; tuition reimbursement; wellness and employee support programs; 401K; and life and other insurance plans. This is all in addition to our comprehensive y competitive health benefits package featuring medical, dental and vision coverage options.
