What does a weekend precision grinding machinist do?

A Weekend Precision Grinding Machinist operates grinding machines to shape and finish metal or other materials with high precision, typically working weekend shifts. Their responsibilities include setting up and maintaining grinding equipment, inspecting finished parts for accuracy, and ensuring all work meets strict quality standards. They may work with blueprints, measure tolerances, and use specialized tools to achieve exact specifications. This role is essential in manufacturing environments where precise metal components are needed, such as in aerospace, automotive, or tool-making industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend precision grinding machinist?

To excel as a Weekend Precision Grinding Machinist, you need experience with machining processes, blueprint reading, and a solid understanding of precision measurement tools, often supported by a technical diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with CNC grinding machines, surface grinders, and quality control systems like CMMs is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong time management are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure high-quality, accurate production of components and reliability in meeting tight weekend production schedules.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges faced by a weekend precision grinding machinist?

As a Weekend Precision Grinding Machinist, you will primarily be responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining precision grinding machines to produce metal parts with tight tolerances. A key challenge in this role is ensuring consistent accuracy and surface finish, especially when working independently during weekend shifts with limited supervision. You may also be required to troubleshoot equipment issues, perform routine maintenance, and inspect finished parts for quality assurance. Collaboration with quality control and maintenance teams is common, although much of your work will be self-directed. This position often provides opportunities to develop specialized machining skills and advance into lead or supervisory roles over time.

Job description

Description

A Precision Grinder with advanced experience in precision grinding operations and process development. This role is responsible for grinding high-precision ball screw components while developing and maintaining processes capable of achieving extremely tight dimensional and surface finish requirements. The ideal candidate will understand the impact of outside processing and material conditions on final grind geometry and performance.

  • Set up, program (where applicable), and operate precision grinding equipment including cylindrical, centerless, thread, and surface grinders
  • Develop grinding processes for precision ball screw components and related assemblies
  • Analyze engineering drawings and process requirements to determine grinding strategy and stock allowances
  • Compensate for dimensional variation resulting from heat treatment, coating, plating, and prior machining operations
  • Establish wheel selection, dressing parameters, and grinding sequences for optimal part quality
  • Perform detailed dimensional and surface finish inspections
  • Troubleshoot grinding issues including taper, chatter, burn, geometry variation, and surface finish defects
  • Collaborate with engineering and quality personnel on process capability and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Maintain process documentation, setup sheets, and inspection records
  • Mentor less experienced machinists and operators
  • Ensure compliance with all quality and safety requirements

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of cylindrical, centerless, and thread grinding processes
  • Experience grinding hardened precision components to micron-level tolerances preferred
  • Ability to develop and optimize grinding processes
  • Strong blueprint reading and GD&T interpretation skills
  • Knowledge of heat treat distortion, stock allowance planning, and material behavior

Minimum Competencies:

  • 5+ years of precision grinding experience in a high-tolerance manufacturing environment
  • Experience with advanced inspection methods and precision gauging
  • Strong troubleshooting and process improvement skills
  • Ball screw, aerospace, bearing, or motion-control manufacturing experience preferred
