Job description

Trinity Industries is seeking a practical, data-driven analyst to support the Portfolio Management team in optimizing the performance, utilization, and profitability of Trinity's railcar fleet. The Portfolio Analyst will help translate complex fleet, maintenance, financial, and operational data into clear insights that support better asset deployment, cost discipline, executive reporting, and long-term portfolio strategy. The ideal candidate brings strong analytical capability, business curiosity, and a continuous improvement mindset, with the ability to partner across Portfolio Management, Maintenance Operations, Structured Finance, IT, and Business Intelligence to strengthen decision-making and improve outcomes across the leasing platform.
What you'll do:
Fleet & Asset Performance
  • Develop and maintain dashboards tracking utilization, availability, and revenue-generating status across ~150,000 railcars
  • Monitor asset health trends and identify at-risk inventory requiring proactive intervention
  • Support lease-term, renewal, and remarketing analytics in partnership with Portfolio Management leadership
  • Partner with Structured Finance on blend and extend opportunities to replace old equipment with new optimal railcars
Maintenance Operations Analytics
  • Analyze termination and assignment expense and capital expenditure budget to actuals
    Identify cost variance drivers and support root-cause analysis for out-of-budget maintenance events
Reporting & Data Infrastructure
  • Own the design and delivery of recurring executive-level reports for portfolio performance review cycles (Shift to DataBricks)
  • Consolidate data from multiple source systems (ERP, AMS, SalesForce, etc.) into a unified reporting layer
  • Partner with IT and Business Intelligence teams to ensure data governance, accuracy, and scalability
Strategic & Ad Hoc Support
  • Respond to ad hoc analytical requests from VPs and SVP leadership in support of business decisions
  • Provide analytical support for initiative tracking, capital planning, and operational improvement programs
  • Assist in building the metrics framework necessary to evaluate economic profit contribution of the maintenance and leasing portfolio

Qualifications
What You'll Have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Data Analytics, Business Analytics, Finance, Engineering, Statistics, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in a data analyst or business intelligence role, preferably in an asset-intensive industry (rail, logistics, manufacturing, leasing, or fleet management)
  • Proficiency in SQL for querying and transforming large datasets
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills; experience with Power BI, Tableau, or equivalent BI platforms
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to translate complex data into executive-ready insights
  • Detail-oriented with demonstrated ability to manage multiple deliverables in a fast-paced environment
Preferred:
  • Experience with railcar, freight, or transportation industry data systems
  • Familiarity with Qlik, Databricks, or similar enterprise analytics environments
  • Experience supporting P&L analysis or cost-center reporting in an operations context
    Python or R experience for advanced data manipulation a plus
