Job description

ABOUT METRO MARKET MEDIA

Metro Market Media is a leader in local media and marketing solutions, dedicated to helping our communities stay informed and connected. Our portfolio includes The Times of Gainesville, Forsyth County News, Dawson County News, specialty publications, and our popular “Best of” awards and events. We are proud of the role we play in our communities, and we are equally proud of the team culture we have built around a shared set of values.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Visual Journalist is responsible for capturing, editing, and producing high-quality visual content for The Times of Gainesville. This position plays a critical role in supporting the newsroom’s digital and multimedia storytelling efforts by producing compelling visual content for breaking news, feature stories, community events, and special projects.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter with strong technical skills, a keen editorial eye, and the flexibility to respond to news as it happens. The Visual Journalist reports to the Managing Editor and works closely with reporters, editors, photographers, and the digital team across all Metro Market Media properties.

OUR CULTURE & CORE VALUES

At Metro Market Media, we hire, develop, and recognize team members against a clearly defined set of core values. These values are not aspirational language — they are the standard by which we evaluate fit, performance, and growth. The successful candidate for this role will demonstrate:

  • Be Honest — Act with integrity and show authenticity — even when it’s hard.
  • Stay Curious — Seek fresh thinking, ask smart questions, and pursue learning.
  • All In, Every Time — Focus on details, take ownership, and go above and beyond.
  • We Before Me — Work collaboratively, offer help, and lead with kindness.
  • Win Together, Grow Together — Deliver results, put customers first, and fuel growth.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

Success in this role is measured by the consistent delivery of high-quality visual storytelling that strengthens the newsroom and engages our audiences. Specifically:

  • Timely, polished visual content delivered for breaking news, features, and community events.
  • Strong editorial judgment reflected in photo and video selections that elevate the story.
  • Reliable responsiveness to news as it happens, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Well-organized media archives that make assets easy for the newsroom to find and reuse.
  • Multimedia packages that perform across digital, social, and print channels.

QUALIFICATIONS

What You’ll Need

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in News Production, Broadcast Journalism, Multimedia Communications, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in videography, photography, video editing, or multimedia production; newsroom experience strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in video and photo editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Photoshop, and Lightroom.
  • Demonstrated ability to shoot and edit under tight deadlines in a fast-paced news environment.
  • Strong understanding of photo and video composition, lighting, audio capture, and color correction.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail in managing digital media assets.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented newsroom environment.
  • Portfolio or demo reel showcasing previous work.
  • Demonstrated alignment with our core values.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with motion graphics, animation, or graphic design tools (e.g., Adobe After Effects).
  • Prior experience in a daily news or community journalism environment.
  • Familiarity with live streaming platforms and social media publishing tools.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Work is performed in both office/studio and field environments; frequent travel to assignment locations throughout Northeast Georgia is required.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions, crowds, and unpredictable environments while covering live events and breaking news.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, and move quickly while carrying photo and video equipment.
  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Extended periods of sitting may be required during editing sessions.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for field assignments.

Additional Requirements

  • Must maintain flexible availability including evenings, weekends, and holidays — breaking news does not follow a set schedule, and this position requires the willingness and ability to respond on short notice.
  • Travel to assignment locations and other Metro Market Media properties as needed; mileage reimbursement provided.
  • Must adhere to all Metro Market Media policies, including the Business Conduct Policy, Confidential Information Policy, and Equipment Use Policy as outlined in the MMM Employee Handbook.
  • Employment is contingent upon successfully passing applicable background checks as required by MMM policy.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Metro Market Media offers a competitive hourly wage commensurate with experience. Our comprehensive benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision coverage; 401(k) with company match; paid time off and paid holidays; and mileage reimbursement for in-market travel. For full benefits details, please refer to the Metro Market 2025 Benefit Guide, which will be provided during the interview process.

WHY METRO MARKET MEDIA

We offer a competitive compensation package, comprehensive benefits, and the opportunity to contribute meaningful work to a values-driven newsroom that genuinely cares about the communities we serve. As our Visual Journalist, you will help shape how our readers see and experience the stories that matter most across Northeast Georgia.
